The conflict in #Gaza is a major stand-off between the #BRICS and #NATO. #Russia and #China are covertly supporting the #Palestinians with the hopes of increasing their influence among Arab nations. Both nuclear powers have aspirations in the region. They would love to gain influence in the Middle East at the expense of the US. Since the conflict between Israel and Hamas broke out, the ferocity of the Israeli retaliation has strained relations between the US and the Arab states. Both China and Russia are attempting to capitalize off the resentment towards the Israeli response among the Arab states by siding with the Palestinians. Deep scars remain in the region from the Bush and Obama administrations and the War on Terror. Many Muslims feel that they remain in a holy war with the US and Israel for control of Muslim lands. Against this backdrop, both Russia and China have been trying to increase regional influence by casing themselves as sympathetic towards Palestinians and Muslims more generally.
