This is the last time I will be having this conversation. Once we isolate this convo. to the pure defensive midfielder duties, there is a strong tactical case that Busquets was better. And you have to ask yourself to duties of a CDM. At the highest level, a #6 is not even primarily judged by tackles or goals. Your game readability should exceed all of that & the ball literally came to Busquets as seen in the video below. Busquets controlled even the opposition’s rhythm in his prime. He didn’t have the speed but he would put off the fire before the smoke. Busquets dominated using the following capabilities: — Controlling central space. — Providing constant passing angles. — Escaping pressure. — Protecting the team's structure (insane anticipation). See the video below. — Screening the back line. — Dictating the tempo of possession. — Preventing transitions before they happen. On those criteria, Busquets remains the reference. But Rodri edges Busquets in areas that have become increasingly valuable in the modern game & that is the reason some tacticos would say that Rodri is the evolution of Busquets who walked, so that Rodri could run. In these criteria, Rodri edges Busquets (who didn’t need that to be a specialist #6). Rodri could pass as a #8 & it shows in his game: — Defensive duels. — Recovery speed over distance. — Aerial dominance. — Ball carrying. — Progressive passing volume. — Shooting and goals. — Adaptability across different tactical systems. But if you now decide to take away goal scoring, carrying, athleticism, and all "modern complete midfielder" qualities, and evaluate only the classical responsibilities of a #6, then Busquets has the edge. If you're choosing the greatest pure defensive midfielder, Busquets is a legitimate choice because his influence came from spatial control, anticipation, and game management rather than physical dominance. That's why many elite coaches still use Busquets as the benchmark when teaching positional play, even though Rodri is the more complete player & viewed as the all-round midfielder.

What I meant was that I love when my CDMs stay more stationery & horizontal than mobile & vertical. It gives the team more security & allows them to read the game better — they then have the entire game in front of them. I love them staying put. Marc Bernal is 18 and Barcelona is a bit of luck away from dominating Europe again; consider Bernal—Gavi—Pedri trio as the next big thing. I mean it. Bernal has room for development, I thought he got a bit too excited and didn’t recognize the third man as he makes a little run into spaces he shouldn’t occupy. He is part of the REST DEFENCE, no? Could Flick have instructed him to attack spaces? I would say no. We had Olmo & Fermin in the game. He had a fantastic outing. Offer pass; receive pass; receive pass–offer pass was his game all night long. Big room for development still & this could be because he started as a CMF. We have a gem.
