NEWS: Elon Musk rejects the far right label in an exchange with The Economist "I support the normal people. What you call the far right, falsely." He challenged the interviewer to say what is extreme about 3 positions. "Here are the principles and tell me which of these sound terrible. That we should have secure borders, that we should have safe cities, that we should have sensible spending. Which of those three are far right fringe?" Elon then turned on the framing itself. "I would like to just admonish you and the media for the absurd characterization of the far right. It is false and misleading and nonsense." He asked that the exchange survive the edit. "Please keep this part in." Elon said the same speeches get judged by who delivered them, describing a habit of reading Obama and Clinton speeches to people and telling them Trump said it. He named Rupert Lowe as an example of who he means by normal people. (Source: The Economist, July 2026)

The IRS is threatening to seize a Tennessee man's farm after charging him interest on a $20,000 refund it accidentally sent him, which he immediately tried to return. Wilson Perry Kirby, 76, says he was accidentally sent $20,000 by the IRS in 2022. Kirby immediately tried returning the money and even hired an accountant to fix the issue. Instead, the IRS is now charging him interest on the money he tried returning and is withholding his 2025 tax refund. "I've tried the president, governor, mayor. They don't mind asking you to vote for them, but when you need help you can't get ahold of nobody," Kirby said. Despite trying to fix the problem, the IRS is still sending letters, demanding he pay interest on the money they accidentally sent him that he tried to return. He never spent it. The IRS is now threatening to seize his farm if he doesn't pay the up to $4300 (and growing) interest. Infuriating. Source: News Channel 5 Nashville / Hannah McDonald

🇨🇳🇮🇷 China is laying railroads that could make the Strait of Hormuz worthless, and America is bombing the tracks that run through Iran Col. Larry Wilkerson, Colin Powell's former chief of staff, keeps pointing at a map almost nobody in Washington bothers to look at. China now runs seven or eight rail lines from its Pacific ports into the heart of Europe, two of them cutting straight across Iran. Cargo that once had to squeeze through Hormuz can ride the tracks instead. Those corridors, by his count, are the ONLY genuinely strategic target America has bombed inside Iran this entire war. Follow that thread and the chokepoints start losing their bite. Hormuz, Bab el Mandeb, even Suez matter a little less every year the trains keep moving, and no navy on earth can blockade freight that never touches water. His verdict on the whole contest: sea power fading, land power rising, both sides holding nuclear weapons for the first time in history.

This Ford F-150 Lightning has an MSRP of $41,669, yet the dealership added a $35,000 “market adjustment,” bringing the price to $76,659 before taxes and fees. Then they wonder why new trucks are sitting on dealership lots. I don’t know who’s paying an extra $35,000 just because the dealer says so. Calling it a “market adjustment” doesn’t magically make it reasonable.

🇺🇸 The U.S. Treasury market is flashing the same warnings it gave in 2008 and March 2020... Global monetary expert Jeffrey Snider says the stress showing up in the short-term lending markets, where banks borrow overnight to stay funded, has nothing to do with a war premium. It's a global dollar shortage that existed before the first missile flew. The difference this time is the rescue. In 2008 and 2020, the Fed had room to flood the system. Jeffrey says that room is largely gone. He's been tracking this for years, and his read now is that no clean bailout waits on the other side. Jeffrey P. Snider

🚨 Elon Musk on DOGE: "I think the goal of DOGE was to try to do something about the deficit, which is massive, where the interest payments exceed the amount of money spent on the Department of War. Like basically, if you add up all the money spent on on what is now the Department of War and the and intelligence in the US, that is smaller than the interest payments on the debt. So we need to sort of take a close look at spending and make sure that money is being spent in sensible ways and that it is not wasted or spent on fraudulent activities. And I got a lot of flack from this for this, obviously. But the people don't understand just how simple it was for the DOGE team to approve payments. If we literally we were just asked to have the contact information of the recipients or some evidence that say money was going to its intended purpose. But over and over that we were told we need to wire money for some sort of important cause in Africa. And we're like, OK, but the wiring wiring instructions are to Deloitte and Touche in D.C., in Washington, D.C., not to Africa. So we would like to send the money to Africa. Can you please connect us with the recipients so we can send them the money directly? And then we get silence."

Elon Musk in new interview on the taxes that he pays: "For my stock options, I pay 40% income tax on a national basis. And then because I spend ~30% of my time in California, I pay another 5%. I pay about 45% in taxes. Then when I die, there will be another 45%, roughly half, that will be taxed. At the end of the day, I'll have a quarter of what I have." via The Economist:

The oil curve is sending a warning most people are not reading correctly... Jeffrey Snider, one of the sharpest macro analysts tracking this conflict, breaks it down for me: WTI September is at $92, Brent over $100, but out to December the price drops to $80, and by June next year it falls to $72 or $73. That isn't the market saying this ends soon. That is the market saying the near-term scramble for oil is real, and demand is going to collapse under the weight of it. "The longer this goes on, the chances of something actually breaking in the real economy just go way up, and it goes up not linearly, it goes up exponentially." On the oil price manipulation theory, that Trump is feeding false optimism to algorithms that trade 70% of oil futures, Snider is no longer skeptical: "You got to give the Trump administration credit for their political objectives, they have every incentive to make sure oil prices don't get out of control." On Iran's restraint: both sides are going incrementally because neither wants to say screw it and go all out. But eventually, someone usually does... Great chatting with Jeffrey P. Snider

🇺🇸 Countries are dumping U.S. assets to get their hands on dollars, and that's the real inflation threat. Global monetary expert Jeffrey Snider says analysts fixated on oil are watching a symptom while the disease spreads underneath. When the world runs short of dollars, every country sells American assets at once to raise them, which crashes bond prices and spikes yields at the worst possible moment. Break that system and the damage transmits instantly across every asset class, with no lag to prepare for. His warning: the bond market already knows something the stock market hasn't priced in yet. Jay Leno says he made $30,000,000 a year hosting The Tonight Show and never spent a single dollar of it. “I was making 30 million a year and NBC said, ‘Well, we’re gonna have to cut half the crew.’ So we had a big meeting and I said, ‘How many feel I should take a 50% pay cut so we can keep everybody?’” “I already have $15 million. I’m doing pretty good, you know? I never thought I’d get this far.” “I always lived on the money I made as a stand-up... I wanted to be a comedian. I never thought TV was a job that would last your whole life.” “I never touched any of it. I always worked.”
