On this day in 1952, Big Mama Thornton recorded the original version of "Hound Dog", years before Elvis ever touched it. The song was actually written specifically for her, and she absolutely killed the vocals. It ended up sitting at #1 on the R&B charts for 7 straight weeks.🎶

Pittsburgh's own Donnie Iris has announced his retirement at 83 years old due to ongoing health issues. If you've ever seen Donnie in concert, you know what a great performer he is. It was always a special experience seeing him on stage. As he steps away from performing to focus on his health, I'm wishing him strength, comfort, and better days ahead. Thank you, Donnie, for the memories and for being such an important part of Pittsburgh's rock and roll history. You will always be a Pittsburgh legend...🙏🤍

In 1958, Link Wray didn't need lyrics to stir up controversy, his raw, gritty instrumental track got banned from radio play, no vocals, just pure sound...It's the only time an instrumental was considered to rebellious for the airwaves...😜🎸🚫

So many legendary performances came out of Woodstock, but Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help from My Friends” is one of my favorites...He took a Beatles song and made it his own...raw, soulful and full of emotion...What a performance...🎶☮

In 1963, The Kingsmen’s hit Louie Louie sparked a three year FBI probe after parents claimed the mumbled lyrics were obscene. Agents played it forward, backward and slowed down. The verdict was unintelligible. Classic case of rumor vs. reality, rock‑n‑roll style...😜🎶🎸
