BREAKING: Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation broadcaster Kan 11 insults the 1,700-year-old Armenian presence in Jerusalem. After Armenia’s Eurovision performance on May 15, a Kan 11 commentator said: “I can’t believe we gave ‘these’ guys an entire quarter in Jerusalem.” Then added: “Survivor — that’s how we feel after watching this song.” For the purpose of historical clarity and accuracy: • The Armenian presence in Jerusalem dates back to 301 AD, when Armenia became the first Christian nation. • The Armenian Quarter was not “given.” It was built, stone by stone, by Armenians over centuries and under empires and dynasties that have long since vanished. • It is not a gift — it is a legacy. One that is preserved, nurtured, and defended to this very day. Such remarks are not just ignorant — they are offensive to the collective memory of Armenians and their millenial-old contributions to the culturual, social, and economical fabric of Jerusalem. The Armenian community in Jerusalem has survived genocide, exile, and erasure — and yet is still, against all odds, here. Still building. Still protecting. Still Armenian. Kan 11 owes the Armenian people an immediate public apology. 301 correspondent: Kegham Balian

BREAKING: Israeli Settlers arrive with guns and dogs on the Cows’ Garden (Goverou Bardez). Around 15:00pm, a group of Israeli extremist settlers arrived on scene where the Armenian community was having a peaceful sit-in. Danny Rothman, backed with 15 settlers, demanded the expulsion of the Armenians: “This is our land, leave the parking lot now!” The Armenians refused to back down, and stood firmly on their rightfully owned property. Israeli Police arrived on the scene to diffuse the situation, which prompted more settlers to arrive in a show of force. George Warwar, a Christian Arab, head of Xana Capital and Mr. Rothman’s business partner, also made threats to Armenians: “I will get you, one by one!” Furthermore, one of the settlers gleefuly announced: “You are all Goys and when the messiah comes, you will all die”. The Israeli settlers and the united Armenian community were at a stand-off. Karnig Kerkonian, heading the legal team called for an emergency meeting with the members of the legal team in Jerusalem and the community activists on the ground to discuss undertaking further legal measures in light of the incursion into Armenian Patriachate grounds in the Old City. As of now, the settlers have left the premises. Further updates will follow. 301 correspondent Kegham Balian

Azerbaijan has successfully pressured Olympic organizers to remove the name “Artsakh” from a musical work that was set to be used in Armenia’s figure skating program at the Winter Olympic Games, forcing the piece to be credited solely under the name of its composer, Ara Gevorgyan. The composition was selected for the short program of Armenian pair figure skaters Karina Akopova and Nikita Rakhmanin, who are scheduled to compete at the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics. The dispute emerged after Azerbaijan’s National Olympic Committee filed a formal complaint on February 6. Although the composition is purely instrumental and contains no lyrics, Azerbaijani authorities objected specifically to the title “Artsakh,” arguing that the term “reflects the ideological essence of the illegal and separatist policy pursued by Armenia for many years against the internationally recognized territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan.” In response, the International Olympic Committee cited its policy of political neutrality, stating that the Olympic platform cannot be used for political purposes. “The Olympic Games are a symbol of peace, friendship, and mutual respect among peoples,” the committee said. Notably, only the title was altered. The composition will still be performed during the competition, underscoring that the intervention targeted terminology rather than artistic content. The incident aligns with Azerbaijan’s broader efforts to challenge and suppress the use of the name “Artsakh” in international cultural and institutional settings, routinely framing even non-political references as political statements. Observers note that enforcing the removal of a specific name following pressure from one party raises serious questions about how political neutrality is applied in practice.

Nikol Pashinyan grabbed a woman by the arm and turned her back toward him during a heated confrontation at a campaign event in Yerevan’s Arabkir district, after she accused him of stealing her homeland, destroying a generation of Armenians, and betraying Artsakh. The woman confronted Pashinyan directly, telling him: “You stole my homeland, and you continue stealing my homeland.” As the exchange escalated, Pashinyan pointed back at her, spoke in an angry tone, and when she turned to leave, grabbed her by the arm and pulled her back toward him. He then launched into threats and insults against his political opponents and people with “Karabakh accents,” calling them “runaway punks,” “cowards,” and “traitors,” while accusing them of fleeing the battlefield and abandoning Armenian soldiers. “Take off your masks, you scoundrels, you cowards, you who left our children alone in front of the enemy,” Pashinyan said. “Rob’s punks (Robert Kocharyan), Serzh’s punks (Serzh Sargsyan), Gago’s punks (Gagik Tsarukyan), Kalugatsu’s (Samvel Karapetyan) punks... I’m going to make all of you kneel.” The video has sparked backlash over Pashinyan’s physical handling of a citizen confronting him in public, his aggressive tone, and his remarks targeting Artsakh Armenians. The incident comes amid continued public anger over the loss of Artsakh, the deaths of thousands of Armenian soldiers, the forced displacement of Artsakh Armenians, and Pashinyan’s government’s handling of the war and its aftermath. #ArmVote26

34 years have passed since the Maragha Massacre. April 10, 1992 marks the Maragha Massacre. Azerbaijani forces attacked the Armenian-populated village of Maragha in Artsakh, brutally killing nearly 100 civilians, including children, women, and the elderly. Many were tortured, taken hostage, or never seen again. This atrocity must never be forgotten. We honor the victims and continue to demand justice and accountability. Azerbaijan’s campaign of ethnic cleansing did not end in 1992. It continued with the complete forced displacement of the Armenian population of Artsakh in 2023. Under the control of an authoritarian regime, the indigenous Armenians of Artsakh have been forcibly displaced from their ancestral homeland and are still prevented from returning.

Lionel Messi is among several football players currently in Baku who laid flowers at the gravesite of Heydar Aliyev, the former authoritarian leader of Azerbaijan. Heydar Aliyev was a deeply oppressive figure whose legacy is defined by authoritarianism and human rights abuses. As Azerbaijan’s leader from 1993 to 2003, Aliyev consolidated power through a regime marked by corruption, repression, and the brutal suppression of political opposition. Before his presidency, Aliyev served as the Communist Party General Secretary of Soviet Azerbaijan, where he implemented policies aimed at “Azerifying” Artsakh. These measures included increasing Azerbaijani influence in the region and pressuring the local Armenian population to emigrate. These policies laid the foundation for the ethnic tensions that escalated into the Artsakh conflict. In 1982, Aliyev’s career reached its peak when he was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister of the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Aliyev returned to Azerbaijan and intensified policies that deepened ethnic and political divisions. He amplified anti-Armenian rhetoric during and after the Artsakh War, further fueling hostility that persists to this day. He also seized control of Nakhichevan and orchestrated the ousting of Azerbaijan’s then-president to secure his grip on power. Domestically, Aliyev’s rule was characterized by severe restrictions on press freedom, with journalists facing harassment, imprisonment, or exile for critical reporting. Protests were violently suppressed, leaving no space for political dissent. His authoritarian practices ensured his unchallenged rule at the expense of the Azerbaijani people’s basic freedoms. Aliyev’s policies and legacy continue to shape Azerbaijan’s political landscape, influencing its stance on human rights and its ongoing aggression toward Armenia and Artsakh. Given Lionel Messi’s longstanding reputation as a humanitarian, we expect more from him in moments like this. In March 2010, Messi was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Messi’s significant contributions to humanitarian causes make his participation in this highly political gesture profoundly disappointing.
