It was a ceremonial standing on the mast, by the ships crew. Video of British navy climbing the Gangs mast. The sailor who is perched on the very top is called the button boy. The button is 18” diameter. To get there he has to pass through the devils elbow, climb up Jacob’s ladder, shin up the remaining mast and somehow stand on the top for the button! Button boy gets a payment of enough money to buy 4 cigarettes. 😊🇬🇧🏴
