Always loved and respected this segment from the Rhyme & Reason documentary (great film and even better soundtrack btw)... Heavy D really seemed like a genuinely good brotha, who also just happened to be talented. His presence is truly missed. Peace to The Heavster 🙏🏾🕊️

A smirk would always find my face whenever I'd hear critics rave about how the South found their shine in the 2Ks. Bless their biased hearts. Those tapped in long before that had to enjoy the genius that is Tela. Memphis could not lose. Sho Nuff w/8Ball & MJG Suave House, 1996

It sucks knowing that there are good fans of hip hop who have not experienced the genius of Devin! He's in a rare category of artists with no bad albums. He just makes quality music. Welp, no different here on "To The Xtreme" "Party" '04

imagine going to the club during this era and you hear this knocking at the entrance? 😮‍💨 That bass line Oscar Alston laid down for Teena Marie's "I need your lovin" should have secured his retirement. This is PEAK LEVEL, dance floor funk. "I need your lovin" '80

I just know when Hi-Tek saved and ran this beat back on his studio monitors, he probably lost all the cartilage in his neck 😤 That ridiculous bass line and that echoed vocal jumping out the speakers every few bars is madness! "Gangsta Boogie" J Dilla feat Snoop & Kokane '16

Easy to overlook The Sylvers. Hell, it took the late, great J Dilla to not only bring back attention to the group, but their earlier work, as well. Their first three albums on Pride are absolute gems from production to arrangement to vocals. Just listen. "Fool's Paradise" '72

I was hunting down anything Jay Dee related during this period. So when this Jazzy Jeff EP hit the locals around ’02, it wasn't even a thought. And this EP & the album that followed for Jeff were dope as hell Jay Dee & Baatin 🕊️ Peace to T3 & Jazzy Jeff "Are You Ready" '02

1996 wouldn't feel like 1996 without the stand out singles and East Flatbush Project probably sits at the top of the list for me. You know it when you hear it. Without further delay... "Tried By 12“ '96

Peace Peace Peace! Getting the day going with Shortie No Mass! I remember when she popped up on De La's Buhloone Mindstate album and dug her energy throughout. I actually didn't know she released a full length album so I definitely gotta tap in. Peace to Shortie! "Like This" '02

This joint just goes hard. That simple. Catching absolute wreck with the cutting and scratching. Produced by Ibu & Mixed by Jazzy Jay, this was hip hop in its rawest form. Was thrilled when I finally snagged this 12 inch single some years back. Divine Force Holy War '87
