When someone converts to Hinduism, it's celebrated as a personal choice. When someone converts to Islam, it suddenly becomes a conspiracy, a "love jihad" case, or a national debate. The question is simple: Do we support freedom of religion for everyone, or only when we agree with the choice?

Calcutta High Court observed that reading six stanzas of Vande Mataram would not cause any harm. Around the same time, action was taken against school principals in Uttar Pradesh over a school prayer containing the line "Mere Allah, burai se bachana mujhko." The question is not about one prayer versus another. The question is whether constitutional protections for religious freedom are being applied consistently. Should the same principles apply to everyone?

During the Babri Masjid Demolition debate, Muslims were told that the Places of Worship Act would protect the religious character of all places as they existed in 1947. Today, the same precedent is repeatedly being used to reopen new disputes. One example is the Bhojshala Temple–Kamal Maula Mosque controversy, where prayers offered for nearly 700 years have now been stopped over claims of temple remains beneath the structure. The question is bigger than one site. Will India be governed by constitutional law, or by endless historical claims and majoritarian pressure? If every mosque can be challenged in the name of history, then what remains of the spirit of the Places of Worship Act?

If encounters are the answer, then ask for them in every murder case. If bulldozers are justice, then use them against every criminal. If your outrage depends on the religion of the accused or the victim, then stop calling it justice. Call it what it is: selective outrage and hypocrisy.

Patriotism cannot be measured by forcing Muslims to sing Vande Mataram. Indian Muslims have contributed immensely to the freedom movement through slogans and poetry like Inquilab Zindabad, Jai Hind, Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna, and Sare Jahan Se Accha. The controversy around Vande Mataram and its association with Anand Math is not new. Leaders like Tagore, Gandhi, Nehru, Azad, Patel, and Bose had already acknowledged the concerns decades ago. Nationalism should unite people, not force them to compromise their faith. Making it mandatory in Bengal madrasas is neither necessary nor inclusive. #vandematram
