You see, my thesis at Gadjah Mada University, the Forestry Faculty, focussed on reducing waste during tree harvesting. I personally cut trees with my logging crew in the forest, so I am familiar with logs that fall during logging, logging waste, and those that fall naturally. Rampant deforestation is evident everywhere, and transparency with the public is crucial.

Clouded leopards roared, orang utans got lost as they watched their wildlife corridors in Borneo being destroyed for a toll road construction to Nusantara the new capital city of Indonesia. Artificial ‘corridors’ will be built for them, as the construction [of the toll road] can’t be stopped. “But the government has pledged to protect wildlife and restore degraded ecosystems,” said a local community representative in despair.

I know this because I was Sustainability MD of a large pulp and paper company for almost 15 years. The barren land is not a result of natural forest clearing; it was likely deforested and converted into plantation land by the company more than six years ago. We need to stop deforestation and work towards restoring the damaged ecosystem.

This breaks my heart. Food estate development in Merauke Papua does not need to destroy forests. We need biodiversity to support resilient food systems, to help mitigate pests and diseases, and the impacts of climate change. Forests and biodiversity must be protected in food estate development, for example by adopting mosaic plantation management.
