I’ve spent the last few days in four countries across the Middle East visiting British Forces on live operations. Our Armed Forces personnel there are working with our allies and partners on the rapidly evolving situation. That’s why I wasn’t in Westminster for yesterday’s vote on the Northern Ireland Legacy Bill. I understand why people feel strongly about this. But the crisis in the Middle East is already affecting us all and it’s ongoing. I served for 24 years. I know what it means to be asked to put your life on the line for this country, and I know what we owe the people who do. For those who served in Northern Ireland, and for their families, this is not an abstract issue. It is about truth, justice, and how we treat those who put themselves on the line for our country. My focus is clear: to make sure the process does not become the punishment, to recognise the difference in law and in fact between those who served the state under orders and those who set out to harm it, and to support veterans and their families in getting as close as possible to truth, reconciliation and justice. I will continue working with colleagues across Government, in private as much as in public, to make sure we get this right. To everyone who served in Northern Ireland, and to the wider veteran community: that commitment does not change. To those that seek to divide the veteran community, question commitment, motivations, honour or question intent, that is your right to do so. And, to those that continue to engage and seek change for justice, let’s keep doing so. We will get there.

I am currently on Reservist training. Here in Norway with the Royal Marine Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron. Dusting off some old skills and drills in the Arctic Circle. It’s -18C but still workable for insertion skills. Norway is not just a strategic ally it’s a geopolitical partnership. With Russian submarine and naval activity in the North Atlantic increasing by over 30% in the past two years we need to increasingly work together. Lunar House is our bilateral agreement with the Norwegians and it’s going from strength to strength. This is the biggest deployment of Marines to the high north in some time.

We need to be paying more attention and learn from our friends in Kyiv. - Over 12,000 drones were operating over a city the size of Hereford in a single day. Yes… one day. - 90% of casualties are caused by drones. Not artillery or rifles. Just drones. - Russia is close to building a million drones a month. Ukraine is trying to match them. - Russia's uncrewed systems force is 80,000 strong. That is bigger than our entire Army. Britain has to catch up and we don't have the luxury of time to do it. We MUST: - Treat drones as ammunition. - Build up always-on drone production here in the UK. - Centralise the data. Use AI to make them smarter. - Stand up an uncrewed systems force now. Not after a review at some point in future… but now. - Cut the rules choking off trial and testing. - Joint ventures between British and Ukrainian industry. They've learnt more in a few years than most countries learn in thirty… - Work with Ukrainian veterans to test how we exercise and operate. Remember: A £4000 drone can take out a £4million tank.

Completely agree with John McDonnell on this. Security isn't a trade-off between nurses and the Armed Forces. We need to completely overhaul MoD procurement and make sure every taxpaying pound goes on the right kit for the next conflict, not the last one.
