The arrest of Greta Thunberg for peacefully opposing genocide and supporting those on hunger strike is wrongful and disturbing. This is yet another shocking example of the UK’s broad terrorism laws being used to target those exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly rights. Reports that Palestine Action activists on hunger strike have been hospitalised due to seriously deteriorating health send chills down the spine. The Government should agree to meet their representatives whilst prosecutors must take steps to end this excessively lengthy pre-trial detention.

Ain't that the truth. There are 14.2 million people living in poverty in the UK and 4.5 million of them are children. That's more than one in every 3 children. Amnesty research shows two-thirds of people in Britain are worried about affording the essentials, like heating and food, this winter. This is a political choice. The Government must and can do so much more to end poverty in the UK in 2026.

On 28th June this year, thousands upon thousands of people came together to defy Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán passing legislation to ban Pride and other protests supporting equal rights of LGBTI people. Demonstrators - including over 280 Amnesty International activists and staff from Hungary and 22 other countries - came together to peacefully demand equality, freedom of assembly and human rights. It was the largest march in Budapest Pride’s history. This is how we respond to people who try to deny our rights.

🚨BREAKING: More than 100 peaceful protestors have been arrested today under terror laws. Amnesty legal observers attended to document the arrests and any human rights violations. The arrests are yet another attack on freedom of speech. Breaking: Today's mass arrests of peaceful protesters in Trafalgar Square under UK terrorism law are yet another blow to civil liberties in this country - and made all the more outrageous by the Metropolitan Police's own U-turn. The High Court ruled in February that the proscription of Palestine Action was unlawful. The Met rightly said it would stop making arrests. It has now gone back to its old, failed policy - mass arrests of people holding pieces of card, including today an elderly woman with walking sticks. This is not policing. This is the state criminalising dissent. Take action now with thousands of other Amnesty International supporters and sign the petition to end all prosecutions against these peaceful protesters.

Peaceful protest is a fundamental right. People are understandably outraged by the ongoing genocide being committed in Gaza and are entitled under international human rights law to express their horror. Amnesty has long criticised UK terrorism law for being excessively broad, vaguely worded and a threat to freedom of expression. Today's response only further demonstrates that our concerns were justified. Any restriction on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly must be lawful, necessary and proportionate to achieving a legitimate aim. Criminalising speech in this context is only permitted when it incites violence or advocates hatred. Expressing support for Palestine Action does not, in itself, meet this threshold.

The Government decided to appeal this decision and police have continued to arrest people who have peacefully opposed the ban. One year ago today, the Government proscribed the direct action protest group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. Since then, over 3,300 arrests have been made of people holding placards. Treating protest as terrorism leaves the door wide open for governments to suppress protest movements in the future, while clamping down on solidarity with Palestinians right now. We cannot challenge injustice and uphold our own rights if we cannot come together to protest. We cannot allow the government to take that right away.
