Because President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud refused to listen to Somalis, abide by his constitutional mandate, and respect the country’s agreed political settlement, the international community is now telling him to stop acting recklessly. See the attached videos. Those in government — and those outside it — who used to cheer him on and tell him, “Dear Leader, you are on the right track,” should be ashamed of themselves. They openly acknowledge that Somalia has a serious political problem and make it clear that President HSM must sit down with the opposition and solve the disagreement. They also state that these countries will serve as observers. The second video, released by the U.S. Embassy, features the senior U.S. general responsible for the Horn of Africa, who speaks about the consequences of ignoring political problems. They said they will leave if these are not solved. We warned Prez Hassan Sheikh Mohamud it would come to this. The world invested blood and treasure to help Somalia stabilize — not to create a mini dictator. He refused to listen. Now they are reading him the riot act. After the communiqué was read, President HSM objected to its inclusion. But of course the statement was intentionally included and broadcast to pressure him and publicly register the troop-contributing countries’ displeasure. If he refuses to heed their message, they can ultimately withdraw their troops, leaving him cornered. This is not something we wanted. No Somali should want a man who nominally claims to be our President to be humiliated in this way. But it is Somalia that has been humiliated because of his past conduct, which has placed the nation in this weakened position. #CaanaKaDhanHee (Good riddance)

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud needs to apologize to the 4 million Somalis in the diaspora whose citizenship he has questioned as per the attached video. He should show them respect, not ridicule. These are the very people who have kept Somalia afloat for 35 years. Moreover, Hassan’s Mogadishu-holed-up FGS contributed only $369.4 million to Somali society in 2024. By contrast, the very diaspora citizens he disparages sent $2.4 billion in remittances alone. And that’s not the full picture — the diaspora also injects millions more through investment and tourism. Yet here we are, with a president on video making a hateful, unacceptable statement that history will not forget. In plain terms: the diaspora he talks down to contributed 650% more to the national economy than his government. He must apologize for his hateful words. Moreover, smart governments make policy carefully, assessing how it affects their most productive citizens. Countries such as India, Ethiopia, and Eritrea issue ID cards to their diasporas, easing administrative hurdles. These cards supplement passports from their adopted countries and allow overseas citizens to come home without being labeled “foreigners” or forced to pay hefty double visa fees—the very burdens Hassan Sheikh and FMS leaders now impose on Somalis abroad. By contrast, demanding that one is “only Somali” if holding a Somali passport is discriminatory. Somali citizenship—Somalinimo itself — is attained by blood (jus sanguinis), not by the farce the president is pushing. And let’s be clear: the Somali citizens he mocks did not leave voluntarily. They were driven out—by warlords and by terror groups. Apologize Mr. President.

When former President Mohamed Farmaajo engineered parliament’s extension of his term in 2021, he argued that he had not personally extended his mandate — that parliament had given him the extension. Last night, Prez Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made a similar argument in the attached video, stating that parliament, through the constitutional changes he spearheaded, had given themselves — as well as him and his cabinet — an additional year in office. This is despite his earlier public position that his mandate was four years and that even if the constitution were amended to provide for five-year terms, such changes would not apply to him, parliament, or his cabinet, but only to the next government. Didn’t read Matt Bryden’s “Somalia at Risk of Becoming a Jihadist State”? Here’s the TL;DR — (and what he’s really doing.) Bryden’s latest piece is a two-dozen-page “brief” in his signature style: open with al-Shabaab “at the gates,” narrate Somali history as one straight line to collapse, and close by insisting only external intervention can keep the fallout “manageable.” The themes never change: federalism is broken; the national government is the villain; Islamists lurk everywhere; donors are exhausted and abandoning; Somaliland deserves recognition; and any federal member state arguing with Mogadishu becomes a “responsible actor.” This isn’t new. It’s the latest entry in a 30-year pattern: • 1999 – Building Block Approach: praise Ethiopia, warn against a Somali central government. • 2003 – No Quick Fixes: downplay terrorism; call critics “alarmist.” • 2003 – Banana Test: argue Somaliland already meets recognition standards. • 2013 – Somalia Redux?: dismiss national progress as a “surreal bubble.” • 2021 – Fake Fight: claim the FGS was colluding with al-Shabaab. The new brief simply reheats the formula. What makes this brief even more revealing is Bryden’s fixation on Islam — in a country that is 100% Sunni Muslim and whose political actors remain united in fighting al-Shabaab and ISIS. Of course he knows religion and politics mix everywhere: Kenya’s evangelical blocs, Ethiopia’s Orthodox and Pentecostal actors, Europe’s Christian Democrats, and the decisive role of America’s Bible Belt states. Yet somehow, Muslim politicians in Somalia are “the threat.” This five-year fear cycle of “the barbarians are coming” is his franchise. Meanwhile, Somalia actually cooperates daily with Kenya, Ethiopia, the EU, UK, U.S., UAE, Qatar, and Türkiye on security, intelligence, aid, and counter-terrorism. Contrary to his script, the UK injected £30 million into Somalia’s security transition last month; the EU continues to fund AUSSOM; the U.S. conducts regular FGS requested strikes; and the successive government he pronounces “dead on arrival” lifted the arms embargo, secured multibillion-dollar debt relief, and — inconveniently for his framing — now Somalia sits on the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, Somalia has had six presidents since 2000, repeated peaceful transfers of power, and zero coups — outperforming most of the global South. Elections are messy, yes, and we’re entering that season again, but they remain peaceful and actors accept results. None of this fits his screenplay. Then comes the Hollywood section of his brief, where he weites: “al-Shabaab’s potential capture of Mogadishu need not foreshadow a total jihadist conquest… A Provisional Federal Government could be established in a secure interim capital…” And continues: “The balance of forces… between a Mogadishu-based al-Shabaab and a Provisional Federal Government in Baidoa… al-Shabaab’s access to port revenues would triple its income…” And! “Since the militants would stand to inherit most of the arms, equipment, and vehicles currently in the SNA’s possession, al Shabaab’s military capabilities would rapidly surge.” At this point, anyone still drinking from Bryden’s well should reconsider. And perhaps — being well beyond retirement age — he might sip his Kool-Aid quietly instead of splashing it across respected platforms. Finally Somalia gave Matt Bryden a lucrative 35-year career, and he repaid it with scorn. Still, we genuinely wish him long and health life — long enough to watch, year after year, the results of our hard work. Also, neither Soomaalinimo — our march toward a strong, peaceful state — nor Islaamnimo — our pride in our faith and our Prophet — is going anywhere. The first video is from today’s African Union Somalia mission troop-contributing countries presser. They openly acknowledge that Somalia has a serious political problem and make it clear that President HSM must sit down with the opposition and solve the disagreement. They also state that these countries will serve as observers. The second video, released by the U.S. Embassy, features the senior U.S. general responsible for the Horn of Africa, who speaks about the consequences of ignoring political problems. They said they will leave if these are not solved. We warned Prez Hassan Sheikh Mohamud it would come to this. The world invested blood and treasure to help Somalia stabilize — not to create a mini dictator. He refused to listen. Now they are reading him the riot act. After the communiqué was read, President HSM objected to its inclusion. But of course the statement was intentionally included and broadcast to pressure him and publicly register the troop-contributing countries’ displeasure. If he refuses to heed their message, they can ultimately withdraw their troops, leaving him cornered. This is not something we wanted. No Somali should want a man who nominally claims to be our President to be humiliated in this way. False-flag operative in Somaliland If one were to rely merely on the hysteria this young lady projects, one would assume Somaliland has already seceded from Somalia, as she ‘celebrates’ Netanyahu’s purported recognition of the northern Somali region. The problem is this: the lady is a foreigner — Ethiopian. We know that over the years hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian migrants have entered Somalia — some transiting toward the Red Sea. Reports today indicate that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is heading to Addis Ababa to meet Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This is a grave mistake. Ten months ago, the president was detained in Addis while attending the AU Summit. Throughout 2024, Ethiopia and Abiy schemed to dismember Somalia and annex its sea and land. They haven’t stopped. Less than a month ago, Abiy stalled the Ankara negotiations for seven hours, objecting to the inclusion of the phrase “Somalia’s unity will be respected” in the communiqué. Now, the Turkish president is reportedly planning visits to Ethiopia and Somalia to mediate and normalize relations, expected in Addis and Mogadishu within days or weeks. So why rush to Addis now—a country actively scheming against Somalia? Doesn’t the opinion of the Somali people matter? These are the same people who stood by you. Why throw them under the bus? Abiy and his deep state know how to manipulate and push their interests. They’re creating a wedge between you and your people, setting you up for betrayal once they have you exposed. What is wrong with you? Why can’t you read the room? Somalia has built strong allies like Egypt, Djibouti, and Eritrea, who stuck their necks out for Somalia and for you as a leader. They risked and strained their relationships with Ethiopia and Abiy’s enablers—those who wish ill for Somalia. Are you throwing that all away too? Why act as though nothing has happened? This is the same Ethiopia that sought to seize Somalia’s seas 500 years ago, still wants them now, and will likely want them 500 years from today. The irony is that you and your officials privately admit to Somalis that their worst fears about Abiy’s intentions are true—nothing has changed. Instead of engaging with Abiy, focus on making peace with other Somalis. Go to Puntland and assist in their fight against ISIS. Provide them with some of the resources the world has given to Somalia to tackle this terror group. Reconcile with Mogadishu politicians, including the two former presidents, past prime ministers, and opposition MPs. Make peace with Jubaland. That’s how Somalia can move forward, enabling elections and an agreed-upon constitution. You have real internal issues to address—issues that can be solved. Yet, you seem to be chasing a mirage: Ethiopia is a rational state with two clear objectives—to keep Somalia destabilized and to seize its sea. You have said this yourself over the past twelve months. Have you forgotten? Mr. President, Abiy is an intelligence officer, and he is entrapping you. He will not cajole or arm-twist regional leaders who oppose you, and even if he tries, it will come at great cost to Somalia and to you.

What Will The International Community Say Now? When former President Mohamed Farmaajo engineered parliament’s extension of his term in 2021, he argued that he had not personally extended his mandate — that parliament had given him the extension. Last night, Prez Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made a similar argument in the attached video, stating that parliament, through the constitutional changes he spearheaded, had given themselves — as well as him and his cabinet — an additional year in office. This is despite his earlier public position that his mandate was four years and that even if the constitution were amended to provide for five-year terms, such changes would not apply to him, parliament, or his cabinet, but only to the next government. Below are selected quotes showing how the international community reacted in April 2021 when Farmaajo’s term extension was announced.
