Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral viewership was unprecedented for its time. Despite the technological & infrastructural limits of 1965, some 350,000,000 people watched the procession (over 10% of the then world population). For its time, it was the largest televised event in history - with more Americans watching his state funeral compared to President Kennedy’s two years earlier.

On the 18th June 1940, Winston Churchill gave his iconic ‘Finest Hour’ speech to Parliament. That evening at 9 PM, he reread it - almost word for word - in a public broadcast. If you listen carefully, you’ll hear when Churchill puffs on his cigar throughout. At the time, parliamentary speeches weren’t recorded. (National Sound Archive, ref. 2488-91, London.)

In May 1959, Sir Winston Churchill - age 84 - visited the United States to see some “old comrades.” During a dinner Churchill had in the White House, President Eisenhower - with tears in his eyes - told his daughter-in-law, “I only wish you could have seen him in his prime.”

Someone compiled excerpts from different Churchill speeches into one video. I unashamedly wept the first time I heard this compilation that was beautifully put together; today I still get goosebumps and tear up hearing it. Sir Winston Churchill was the master orator.
