Abi-Gaye Smythe, Founder of the “I Have a Heart Foundation,” shared a heartfelt account of what can happen when advocacy meets a government that listens and acts. She recalled meeting me in 2020 to raise concerns about the need for trained perfusionists in Jamaica’s cardiac care system. I listened and took action, leading to scholarships for perfusion medicine and the training of two Jamaican perfusionists. As someone living with a serious heart condition and who has undergone multiple cardiac surgeries at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Abi-Gaye said she remains committed to advocating for stronger cardiac care in Jamaica.

What a match. Spain played with passion and determination from start to finish, and they earned this historic victory. Argentina also gave a strong performance and showed why they are one of football’s great nations. Congratulations to both teams for giving fans a memorable final. I also commend FIFA, and the people of the United States, Mexico and Canada for hosting a wonderful tournament that brought the world together through football. Football is truly the world’s game. It has a unique way of bringing people together through a shared love of sport. We look forward to Jamaica’s return to football’s biggest stage. Until then, we celebrate excellence, sportsmanship and the joy that this beautiful game continues to bring to millions around the world.

History made. 🇯🇲 On this Emancipation Day, our Sunshine Girls have given Jamaica another reason to celebrate. With a historic victory over Australia, they have secured their place in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Final. Congratulations, Sunshine Girls. The entire country is proud of you and will be cheering you on in the final! Go for gold!

Today, I am in Cooper’s Pen, Trelawny, alongside MP Tova Hamilton, Minister Edmund Bartlett and State Minister Abka Fitz-Henley, engaging with residents to better understand their individual circumstances and determine what support and solutions may be available. For many families, this is a difficult and uncertain time. That is why we are taking the time to listen, assess each situation and explore practical options. Our approach must be compassionate and focused on finding sustainable solutions. We will continue to work with the affected families and provide the necessary support as we move forward.

There has been a lot of discussion about the plaque placed on the houses of the New Social Housing Programme. The plaque on Pauline’s house does not take away her dignity. The indignity is not having a house. Today, Pauline has a safe and secure home, and that is something to be proud of. This house was built with your tax dollars. Every road, every school, every hospital and every house built with public funds is something the public should see and know about. Your money should never be spent quietly and without recognition. But getting this house also comes with a responsibility. Pauline must continue to be an upstanding member of her community and give back through the way she lives and contributes. That is what public investment should do, give people an opportunity to build a better life and strengthen their communities.

The G20 (Group of Twenty) is where leaders from the world’s largest economies meet to discuss global economic issues, development, and major international challenges. Having just experienced the most devastating hurricane in our nation’s history, our experience and the call for climate action will be on my agenda. Before I depart, however, I am having the customary security briefing.

We must speak plainly about what is happening in Cuba. Cuba is our Caribbean neighbour. Their doctors and teachers have supported countries across our region, including Jamaica. Our histories are connected, and we care deeply about the Cuban people. Today, many Cubans are facing serious economic hardship, energy shortages, and growing humanitarian challenges. We are sensitive to their struggles. But we must also recognise that a prolonged crisis in Cuba will not remain there. It can impact migration, security, and economic stability across the Caribbean, including Jamaica. Jamaica stands for democracy, human rights, accountability, and open, market-based economies. I believe lasting stability comes when people have opportunity, a voice in their governance, and the freedom to build and invest. This moment calls for responsible leadership and constructive dialogue, particularly between Cuba and the United States, to ease tensions and promote reform and stability. Jamaica will continue to stand in solidarity with the Cuban people while supporting practical steps that lead to stability and shared prosperity for our region.

Some moments stay with you. 🌸 During the 2025 election campaign, we were driving through when, out of nowhere, I saw a bouquet of flowers coming towards me. I reached out, caught it, and before I knew it, we had driven on. I never got the chance to properly thank the person who had made such a thoughtful gesture. So imagine how lovely it was to finally meet her! I was able to tell her that I remembered that moment, that her kindness meant something to me, and, most importantly, that I still have the bouquet. Campaigns move quickly. There are crowds, long days and countless encounters, but it is often the simple, genuine acts of kindness that you remember long after. Thank you for that beautiful gesture and for the love and support behind it. It was such a pleasure finally meeting you.

Our young people have fully embraced social media and it’s interesting to see how they express themselves creatively. Yesterday I shared a light moment with Bad Sekki and Ganja Clause. There were a number of other young people and social media content creators in the space yesterday, and although I didn’t get a chance to meet everyone, I see you and I encourage to continue to express your creativity with our unique Jamaican flair.

If we are to understand many of the challenges Jamaica faces today, we must honestly reflect on the policy decisions made in the 1990s by the People’s National Party, which led to the Financial Sector Adjustment Company crisis. When the financial sector collapsed, the government at the time created FINSAC to bail out failing institutions, and that intervention cost the country approximately 42 percent of our entire economy. As a result, Jamaica’s national debt rose dramatically, from about 72 percent of GDP to nearly 130 percent within a few years. At one point, almost 70 percent of the taxes collected by the government had to be used simply to pay interest on that debt. This meant there was very little money left to maintain roads, repair hospitals, build schools, or invest in the infrastructure our people depend on every day. For many years, the country had to focus on stabilizing the economy and restoring fiscal discipline so that we could rebuild our financial strength. My commitment is to ensure that Jamaica never returns to those kinds of policy decisions that placed such a heavy burden on our people and our economy.

We must be willing to have honest conversations about Jamaica’s history and the decisions that have shaped our country. From 1972 to 1980, Jamaica adopted democratic socialism and shifted its foreign policy, strengthening relations with socialist countries, including Cuba, while joining the Non-Aligned Movement. That period was followed by serious economic challenges, our first major debt crisis, and increased political and gang violence. I respect Michael Manley’s intellect and his willingness to challenge the status quo, but I also question the judgment behind the direction Jamaica took during that period. Today, the global system is changing again. With the rise of China, India, Russia and the European Union, Jamaica must remain strategic in how we engage the world. Our foreign policy must always put Jamaica’s national interest first. We cannot abandon multilateralism, but we must ensure that the system works for the realities of today and that Jamaica has a strong voice in it.

Hurricane Melissa has strengthened to a Category 5 system and is now approximately 100 miles south of Kingston, moving slowly westward. Based on current projections, all of Jamaica is likely to experience hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, and flooding. The Government has declared the entire island a threatened area under the Disaster Risk Management Act, empowering agencies to take all necessary measures to protect lives and property. Shelters are open, emergency teams are on standby, and compulsory evacuations have been ordered for vulnerable coastal and flood-prone communities. Over $400 million has been allocated for drain cleaning and local preparedness, and emergency relief and recovery plans are fully activated. Our security forces and first responders are mobilized to maintain order and provide support before, during, and after the hurricane. I urge every Jamaican to prepare, stay indoors during the storm, and comply with evacuation orders. Check on your neighbours, especially the elderly and vulnerable, and continue to pray for our nation’s safety. We will weather this storm and rebuild stronger.

Growth requires patience. Like tending to a plant, the effort we invest today may take time to show, but with discipline and persistence, it will bear fruit. Let us remain committed to the process, knowing that in due season, we will reap the rewards of our labour. Happy Sunday Jamaica, plant a tree today!
