Gwynn Sr. died of salivary gland cancer on June 16, 2014, at 54. His son was on the Phillies' roster that season and happened to be in the visiting dugout in Philadelphia when the news broke mid-game, which is why the ovation came from the road crowd instead of San Diego.

June 3, 2003. Sosa's bat split open and cork fell out. MLB gave him eight games, cut to seven on appeal. They x-rayed all 76 bats confiscated that day plus five already in Cooperstown, and every one of them came back clean, which is why his batting practice explanation held up better than people remember.

Vin Scully explaining the history of home plate. This is exactly the kind of topic that showed why Scully was different. Ken Griffey Jr.'s final career hit was a walk-off RBI single on May 20, 2010. He came off the bench in the ninth and singled off Kevin Gregg to give Seattle a 4-3 win over Toronto. Less than two weeks later he retired. A pretty fitting last hit for a player so tied to that city. One last swing, one last game winning moment at home.

Barry Bonds said it himself, Ichiro could win a Home Run Derby any year he wanted if he just decided to swing for the fences instead of poking singles. People who watched his batting practice sessions backed it up too, saying he'd put on light shows in BP that never once showed up in an actual game. He chose contact and placement over pop.
