Over the last 24 hours, Chief Minister V D Satheesan has made two statements that deserve a clear response. First, while speaking about communal harmony in the context of the Kashi restaurant in Fort Kochi, named after a Hindu holy city, which serves beef and displays Muhammad Ali Jinnah, I want to remind the Chief Minister that communal harmony and respect for religious sentiments must work both ways. While every establishment has the right to serve food of its choice, freedom of expression under Article 19 must be understood alongside its constitutional limitations under Article 19(2). What would happen if a restaurant were named after a Muslim holy city and served pork? I am not advocating such a situation, but asking whether the political establishment would respond with the same restraint. Secularism cannot be selective or dictated by political convenience. The faith and sentiments of every Malayali, whether Hindu, Muslim or Christian, deserve equal respect. Second, the Chief Minister’s remarks in Delhi on the growth of the Indian Union Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami raise a serious question about Kerala’s future. As our state approaches its 70th anniversary on November 1, after decades of Congress and CPM rule, are Malayalis really left with only two choices a religion-based political party or extremism? I categorically reject this false choice. Malayalis deserve better than decades of Congress–CPM politics and the divisions they have perpetuated. There is a third way the Narendra Modi way: a path of development, good governance, equal opportunity and dignity for every Malayali, irrespective of religion or community. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party speak extensively about secularism and democracy at the national level. Yet, in Keralam, Congress has entered into political alliance with the Indian Union Muslim League Jamaat-e-Islami. The Congress-led political front has increasingly come under scrutiny for its dependence on organisations such as the IUML, Jamaat-e-Islami and SDPI. This reflects a political strategy driven more by electoral calculations than by the principles Congress claims to uphold nationally. This is what we have been warning about since May 2025. We called it #APAKADAMPolitics — a politics that, puts political expediency ahead of development and governance. The concerns go beyond alliances. Questions are being raised over Kerala’s economic situation, employment opportunities, investment, inflation and the government’s priorities. While ordinary families struggle with rising financial pressures, allegations of political privilege and extravagant lifestyles among those in power continue to fuel public anger. At the same time, serious questions have been raised over security failures during the visits of senior constitutional authorities, including the Union Home Minister and the Vice President. Such incidents demand accountability and a transparent examination of the state’s law-and-order arrangements. Kerala deserves a politics focused on development, investment, employment, security and equal opportunity #VikasitaKeralam for what BJP stands for— not one defined by appeasement, political compromises and allegations of corruption. We strongly condemn the shocking footage from the Kanhangad protest. The chants of "We will hang you in temples" and "We will burn you alive" by the Muslim League, aimed at Hindus, are utterly reprehensible and cannot be justified. Rahul Gandhi must be held accountable for the actions of the party he calls 'secular'. This instance is a worrying indicator of the Congress and its allies targeting Hindu society.
