On May 12, 2022, Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a 22-year-old second-year Christian student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, Nigeria, was brutally stoned to death and set ablaze by a mob of Muslim students. Her "crime"? An alleged blasphemous WhatsApp message against Islam. Fast-forward to 2023. The two main suspects, charged only with "criminal conspiracy and incitement of public disturbance", bailable offenses carrying a max of 2 years were acquitted. Why? Prosecution lawyers simply didn't show up in court. Meanwhile, a powerhouse team of 34 lawyers, led by Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, swooped in to defend them from day one. Two years later, justice for Deborah remains a ghost. This is not isolated blasphemy mobs thrive under Nigeria's dual legal system. Sharia law in the north clashes violently with secular codes, breeding impunity and division. If Nigeria truly believes in "One Nigeria," the government must abolish Sharia law NOW.
