June 7, 1862 - The last U.S. military tribunal resulting in a hanging for treason occurred during the American Civil War. William Bruce Mumford, a New Orleans resident and Confederate sympathizer, was court-martialed by a Union military commission for tearing down a U.S. flag from the New Orleans Mint after the city's capture by Union forces. He was convicted of treason against the United States and hanged that day under orders from Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler. Mumford remains the only person formally executed for federal treason during the Civil War and the last such execution in U.S. history.
