At Nikko in Japan, visitors often pause before a familiar carving of three monkeys—one covering its eyes, one its ears, and one its mouth. The lesson is simple and memorable: see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. But for disciples of Jesus Christ, avoiding evil is not the end of our responsibility. It is only the beginning. As children of God blessed with the gift of agency, you and I choose what we will see, whose voice we will hear, and what messages we will speak.

Today, September 1, is the 125th anniversary of the dedication of country of Japan for the preaching of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. This weekend, I was grateful to speak at a special nationwide broadcast from a meetinghouse in Yokohama, Japan near the site where the dedication occurred. The message I shared at the broadcast is the same message that has been preached to millions of people across the globe—that Jesus Christ loves you and what He did through His Atonement is for you, a beloved child of your Heavenly Father.

As we repent, strive to remember and honor our covenants, and prepare throughout the week to participate in the ordinance of the sacrament, we can be blessed to always retain a remission of our sins through the redeeming and saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ. The partaking of the bread and the water does not remit sins. It is the Lord Jesus Christ who forgives us of sin as we repent and come unto Him.

Susan and I have spent the day with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other community members who were involved in the tragic shooting episode that took place in Michigan on Sunday. The devotion of these faithful members makes me want to be more devoted, and the faithfulness of these good people makes me want to be more faithful. They have the capacity—because of the eternal perspective of the gospel of Jesus Christ—to learn lessons in tragedy in mortality that prepare them for eternal life. We are familiar with the admonition that we should mourn with those that mourn. There are broken hearts here in Michigan. My invitation to any and all is to continue to pray for these good people.

Because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, you and I can be cleansed of our sins and have our natures transformed. I shared with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Korea that the Savior blesses each of us as we exercise faith in Him, repent, receive the covenants and ordinances of the gospel, and do our best to become better—with God’s help—every day.

As we act in accordance with the truths of the Savior’s gospel and trust in His promises, we are blessed with the spiritual capacity to “rise up” and press forward through the challenges of mortality while experiencing the joys His gospel makes possible in our lives.

Enduring to the end is linked inextricably to the spiritual gift of charity. Enduring to the end is not merely a relentless determination to grit our teeth, hold on to the limits of our physical strength and mental capacity, and push through the challenges and adversities of mortal life; it is so much more than that. Enduring to the end is the joyous quest of a lifetime—a pressing forward with faith in Jesus Christ in a gradual process of trusting in and receiving help from our Savior to become more like Him. As our love for Him grows ever stronger and deeper, we can be blessed to receive spiritual perspective, the Lord’s empowering grace, and exceedingly great and indescribable joy.
