Garda Commissioner Drew Harris says he finds the strong electoral performance of Gerard 'The Monk' Hutch to be "concerning" and "a societal problem". I think anyone else engaging in such commentary would be perfectly within their rights to talk this way - if a politician, commentator, or random member of the public said this, there'd be no issue. However, it is way out of order for the head of the police to make such remarks about any political candidate, no matter who they are. If Jeffrey Dahmer somehow managed to get onto an Irish ballot paper legally, I would expect him to be treated with the same impartiality by the Gardaí as any other candidate. Deeply inappropriate intervention by Harris in my view.
