AIR INDIA 787 ‘thoughts’ I’m surprised nobody, even the experts) have mentioned this… The 787 Dreamliner (all variants) has an ‘Air Ground Sensing’ system that opens the Main Gear doors immediately upon leaving the runway and prior to the (Flight Deck) Lever being moved manually to the ‘up’ position. I’ve witnessed this literally hundreds of times when filming The 787 and it’s clear on the footage attached: upon rotate, about one second from wheels off ground, the main Gear Doors open. Then, around three to four seconds (pilot discretion) Positive Rate is called/agreed and the Gear Lever is moved to the UP position. On a side note, the 787 is quite prone to brake malfunction, mostly down to the electric brake system that can fail from time to time on a single (or more) wheel. If the wheels are not retracted within a given amount of time due to a wheel continuing to spin, the gear doors will close back-up until the wheel(s) stop spinning and the gear is recycled at which time the doors will re-open and the gear will retract fully. This is the takeoff/gear-up procedure with all 787s. This is quite clearly not the case when observing the CCTV footage of the doomed Air India jet. I think it’s quite evident there was some kind of (electrical?) malfunction with the system(s). The question of the Flap (takeoff) Setting is still a mystery as, with poor quality footage, it’s difficult to completely confirm whether the flaps were extended or not. In my personal opinion they were not extended. There was a CNN reporter right next to one of the wings on the ground. Although it was heavily charred, it would’ve been clear to see if they were extended or not 🤷🏼♂️ Also, as for possible (engine) ingestion/failure, whether by birds or other FOD, there is no evidence of engine Compressor Stall, which is very clear to see in many videos online when it does happen with bird strikes, especially at rotate power/speed. The engine(s) will ‘pop’ flames out of the back. What is evident, is that the Jet uses all of the available runway, which is clear by the amount of dust being kicked-up on rotate. The Jet never seems to reach the optimal takeoff angle, right from the rotate point it appears to struggle, which would suggest either engine power issues or, as mentioned, the lack of lift from the Flaps/Slats. Witness accounts say there was a distinct lack of engine noise coming from the jet, which backs-up some theories of engine failure. You would expect, even with a lack of Flap setting the pilot would be able to increase to max (TOGA) power to give them some chance of climbing or at least gaining enough altitude to get themselves back to the airfield or to a safer (crash) landing zone. That ‘power up’ would be evident with black exhaust from the engines, but that didn’t happen - at all. You’ll see/hear from the (second part) footage I’ve filmed, that the engine sound is very evident at this height and that this climb-out is too Standard Operating Procedures. Personally I find it hard to believe the NFP would make such a rookie mistake as to raise the flaps (push and move the staggered lever) as opposed to the gear lever which is a simple up-down motion. The two levers are also in completely different positions: Gear lever on the facing panel and flap lever (with many settings) next to the throttles. Plus this is such a basic procedure that even the most rookie pilot wouldn’t make this mistake 🤷🏼♂️ Again, this is just my opinion and observations based on visual and actual experiences. The CVR and FDR will deliver the final evidence.

American 777 insane landing at London Heathrow! Caught during our livestream at Heathrow Airport. Strong, gusting crosswind elements catching-out even the most seasoned pilots! Wouldn’t have liked being the NFP on this one 😂 watch the flight surfaces 🫨 Get involved: what’s your take on this 🤷♂️ #avgeek #aviation #StormGerrit

By this time on a Sunday I’m not long from leaving base to head for the filming destination. Full of anticipation and excitement, hopeful that it’ll all work-out knowing there’s a thousand of our family as eager as I am for their weekly dose of friendly interaction. I look forward so much to the first Jet to feature - is that a Quad Jet can see lining-up 👀 on finals? ‘Ok GP LET’S GO, mics good? Everything else popping? Here we go! I’ll go with PTC To you my amazing family, like walking through the front door and being met with that warm greeting, I just love that moment! And the conversation that follows, the tsunami of knowledge, the updates, your’ presence is what powers me, on a day of the week that’s ’ become part of our natural psyche Right now as I write this I feel a sincere level of desperation. I know light is visible to the end, but it’s the not knowing or having any information I can feed-back to you. I know people are saying’ be patient ‘n all, but I’m human and I long for that feeling of normality once again. I’m not gonna be signing-up to any marathons here, just back on a well managed regime to be back in the seat and for us to all be back together again. I cannot express my sincere overwhelming gratitude towards everybody who’s shown their support. Gilly has shown me all your comments! Thanks so much your messages and your continuous support so it’s getting late and I’m just laying here scrolling the library and found this classic. Did we ever determine if this was a tail-wind landing🤔🤔 Jerry

BOSH! A350 HARD LANDING 😮 CX239 from Hong Kong smokes the mains on Rwy 27L during crosswinds at London Heathrow. Watch as the opposite inertia kicks the 230 tonne flying machine all over the place. A real battle between pilot and machine to get that thing straightened up with the rudder - Pilot won it 💪🏻 The direction that thing was facing once they’d caught it, I seriously thought they would Go-Around. Pilots were saying after the show, and I completely understand, that ‘this footage doesn’t replicate the turbulence we experience in the last 2 miles of approach’. I’ve been a passenger during strong winds on approach. Seeing the wing flexing and the flight surfaces going crazy, I imagine the pilots up-front in complete calm: Aircraft crabbing, NFP calling-out the numbers, picking their moment to go manual, one hand on the Thrust Levers, expecting those last-second gusts. Even during a landing like this, you’d be surprised to see just how calm the pilots are when it’s all going-on Get involved ✍️

SHOW ALERT 🚨 WEATHER WARNING ⚠️ Hold onto yer hats boys n’ girls. Winds/gusts are expected to be as high as 55mph tomorrow and as a south-westerly 💪🏻 so it’s gonna get hairy 💨 I’ll be live from the Paddock to kick-off, then with the winds continuing through past the switchover, we’ll possibly change locations to the northern runway. But recently in high winds, Heathrow Tower/Operations have continued-on with Southern Runway arrivals due to the ‘shed effect’ on arrivals into the northern, resulting in more TOGAs. It’s all ‘up in the air’ right now, but one thing’s for sure, we’re in for a bumpy ride 💪🏻 live at 10:00BST 🍿

FIRST EVER (LIVE) DREAMLIFTER GO AROUND? Anchorage Airport was busy this week with the Boeing DreamLifter moving between Nagoya and Charleston via ANC (tech) with Parts for the Dreamliner. Conditions for this (7R) approach were pretty tricky with variable, gusting conditions. By the time this guy was lined-up, winds had switched and they were fighting a ten knot tailwind! I’m lead to believe that’s the maximum Tailwind landing speed for the 747 🤔 Anyhoo, N780BA returned for a successful 33 Approach and Landing. Is this the first time a DreamLifter has been caught on film executing a Missed Approach/Go Around 🤷🏼♂️ Thanks Flightradar24 😉 we got her to No1 tracked worldwide 🌎

BELUGA LIVE AT HEATHROW! Join us live on (Tomorrow) Monday morning from Heathrow Airport to catch the arrival of the Airbus XL6 Transport Jet. This is one incredible aircraft used by Airframer Airbus to deliver aircraft components to the final assembly lines. This operation is to deliver a specially fabricated part for a British Airways A350. Join me live (On Air 10:00BST) to follow the aircraft on Flightradar24 from her base in Toulouse all the way to the landing at Heathrow. Then later in the day we hope to catch her departure.
