He opens with what sounds like a wildly inappropriate suggestion about the landlady’s backside. When she freezes, he calmly clarifies it was just “particularly grotty weather tonight.” The delivery is so smooth you almost believe him until he does it again. Then he clocks her top and says it “looks a little risky.” She thinks he’s commenting on her jumper. He was apparently ordering whiskey. The look on her face is pure “did this man just…?” and the recovery is chef’s kiss. It gets better when Ronnie Corbett turns up with company. Our hero greets them with “Now, who’s this silly arse with an ugly daughter?” and somehow walks it back into “would you kindly pass the jug of water?” The pure deadpan while everyone tries not to laugh is what makes it. The final blow lands with “Thanks awfully, you dozy fish face” instantly rewritten as “awfully cosy this place.” He’s not even trying to hide the grin by this point. This is pure 1970s wordplay done by masters who trusted the audience to catch every mishearing. No one does this style of precision chaos anymore, and watching Barker sell every line like it’s completely innocent is still peak comedy.
