Set in 14th-century Sweden during the horrors of the Black Death, the story follows Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), a disillusioned knight returning from the Crusades. Tormented by existential doubt and the agonizing "silence of God," Block encounters the personification of Death (played iconically by Bengt Ekerot) on a desolate beach. To delay his demise and buy enough time to perform one meaningful, redemptive act in life, the knight challenges Death to a strategic game of chess. As their fateful match progresses across a plague-ravaged landscape, Block and his cynical squire Jöns journey past a gallery of desperate flagellants, accused witches, and a pure-hearted troupe of traveling actors. The Seventh Seal (1957) is a Swedish historical fantasy-drama film directed by Ingmar Bergman.
