Thistlethwaite’s confusion over negative equity is particularly concerning given his own political background. He had also served on Parliament’s Corporations and Financial Services Committee. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 Negative equity occurs when the market value of a property falls below the amount still owing on the mortgage. It is determined by the value of the property compared with the outstanding loan balance. Loan default, by contrast, occurs when a borrower fails to meet their repayment obligations. It is a question of whether the borrower is making the required payments, not what the property is worth. A homeowner can therefore make every repayment on time, or even be ahead on their mortgage, and still be in negative equity if the value of their home has fallen sufficiently. Likewise, a borrower can fall behind on repayments while still owning a property worth considerably more than the amount they owe. 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 PropTrack recorded national home-price falls in May, June and July, with prices dropping another 0.3% in July alone and now sitting 1.8% below their March 2026 peak. Every capital city except Darwin recorded a fall in July, led by Sydney (-0.6%), Adelaide (-0.5%), Hobart (-0.5%), Canberra (-0.5%) and Melbourne (-0.4%). Anthony Albanese was asked to explain Labor’s six-point NDIS plan, failed to recall it when pressed, then denied that he had made any mistake despite the exchange unfolding exactly as David Speers described. When Speers raised the stumble, Albanese immediately dismissed the questioning as “gotcha game playing”. He then claimed he had not been given the opportunity to explain the plan.
