Residents living around Masinga Dam have raised concerns over what they say is severe contamination of the dam’s water, allegedly caused by industrial and sewage waste discharged upstream from Kirinyaga County. According to residents, the water has become unsafe for domestic use and is reportedly unsuitable even for livestock. They claim the contamination has already affected a significant section of the dam, extending from the Tana River Bridge along the Nairobi–Meru Road and downstream. Residents are calling on NEMA Kenya, KenGenKenya(whose officials are alleged to have allowed this to happen), and other relevant authorities to investigate the alleged pollution urgently, establish the source of the contamination, and take action to protect communities that depend on Masinga Dam for water.
