60 years ago today, The Beach Boys released “God Only Knows” from Pet Sounds. Written by Brian and Tony Asher, the baroque-style love song distinguished for its harmonic innovation and complexity, unusual instrumentation, and subversion of typical pop music conventions.

The A-side of the “God Only Knows” single released yesterday, sixty years ago was “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” Here’s Brian in 2006 talking about the song. Tell us what you think!

Unreleased harmonies recorded for Brian’s 1988 solo debut album, Brian Wilson, released July 12, 1988. “It was my first official solo album, even though Pet Sounds came together like a solo record. It had some really great songs on it.”

Today in 1966, The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds. The album is considered to be Brian’s masterwork, recognized for its ambitious production, sophisticated music and harmonies, and emotional lyrics. Learn more about the album at

2007: Brian talks about the Beach Boys classic, “Please Let Me Wonder.” Instrumentation for the track included drums, timpani, bass, two guitars, acoustic guitar, piano, tack piano, organ, horns, and vibraphone. It was issued as the B-side of “Do You Wanna Dance?”.

Today in 1968, The Beach Boys released their fourteenth studio album, Friends. Recorded at Brian’s home, the album is characterized by its calm and peaceful atmosphere. Brian has at times called it his favorite Beach Boys album. Where do you put it?

Yesterday at Capitol Records, Pet Sounds was celebrated for it’s upcoming 60th anniversary and new double-platinum album status. Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and Brian’s family participated in this amazing event!

Today in 1965, the Beach Boys released their ninth studio album, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) album. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Album Charts and contained the monster singles, “California Girls” and “Help Me, Rhonda.” Here, Brian talks about “You’re So Good to Me."
