We’ve failed to openly discuss just how appalling the grooming gangs abuse is. Many of the survivors endured nothing short of torture. So why do Britons know more about George Floyd than this national atrocity?

Grooming gang victim Anne moved near Piddington “for a peaceful life, to be able to heal.” She told me that this has been “stripped away” by government plans to house 1,250 migrant men in a nearby former military site.

Greater Manchester deputy mayor Kate Green told a grooming gang victim last July that it was important that their voices were heard in the assurance review. But the inspectors didn't interview them and that victim didn't hear back from Green. I asked her if she regretted that.

Sageer Hussain was previously jailed in 2016 for Rotherham abuse. Three of his brothers are also behind bars for a separate abuse case. Sageer once notoriously defended his brother and told journalists that the girls were to blame for the sexual violence they endured.

Sadiq Khan said last year there was no "indication of ... grooming gangs" of the Rotherham model in London. He was wrong. This form of abuse needs a particular focus to overcome the denial and obfuscation that has blighted investigations in the capital and all over the country.
