Today, Prime Minister Mark Carney suggested he would not recognize a Palestinian state unless it was “Zionist.” In doing so, Carney is asking Palestinians to adopt the political ideology of their oppressors as a pre-condition for self-determination. He is dead wrong. Zionism has played a central role in the dispossession and oppression of the Palestinian people, and Palestinians have absolutely no obligation to endorse it. Moreover, the ICJ has affirmed that the right to Palestinian self-determination is inalienable and “cannot be subject to conditions on the part of the occupying Power.” Carney must immediately apologize for these deeply ignorant and offensive statements. Neither Canada nor Israel get a right to veto Palestinian freedom.

We are alarmed that Prime Minister Mark Carney is refusing to “categorically rule out” Canada’s participation in the war on Iran, even after he acknowledged yesterday that the US-Israeli attacks appear to violate international law. It shouldn’t be this difficult. Canadians do not want to join this illegal war of aggression, and we refuse to let allow Carney leave that door open.

CBC aired a news broadcast on the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran where host Rosemary Barton allowed Israeli politician Yair Lapid to advocate for foreign-imposed regime change in Iran without meaningful journalistic challenge. Lapid argued that Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was not a legitimate head of state, using this claim to suggest that Iran is not entitled to the protections normally afforded to sovereign states under international law. Such reasoning misrepresents international law and directly conflicts with Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the political independence of any state. CBC undermines its own journalistic credibility by failing to challenge this reasoning and allowing a foreign political leader to advocate for the selective application of the rules-based international order. He followed this argument by stating that continued airstrikes on Iran as a means of facilitating regime change, arguing that military action could weaken the Iranian state and enable a civilian uprising that would bring about democracy and that “freedom” in Iran could result from Israeli and U.S. airstrikes. Further, Iran offered the day before the US and Israel attacks that they would agree to “never” stockpile enriched uranium as part of negotiations. Ms. Barton doesn’t challenge the longstanding U.S. and Israeli narrative that Iran is perpetually on the brink of developing nuclear weapons, a claim that has been invoked for decades to manufacture consent for further military aggression. Public broadcasters such as CBC have a professional obligation to challenge unsubstantiated claims—particularly when a foreign political figure is advocating for expanded military operations against another sovereign state. By failing to provide humanitarian context or legal scrutiny, CBC is normalizing civilian harm as an acceptable by-product of western imperialism. You can’t say you are “committed to a peaceful future in the Middle East” while allowing the transfer of Canadian weapons to the Israeli military amid a genocide. When asked why he hasn’t imposed a real arms embargo on Israel or cut off diplomatic ties in response to Israel’s slaughter of children and students, Justin Trudeau put the blame on Hamas and said that Israel has a right to defend itself. Today, Mark Carney refused to say whether US strikes on Iran violate international law, and instead spoke about Iran: “these are violations of international law, these are the ones we look to.” But that’s not how the law works — whatever Iran’s alleged actions, this does not give a green light for others to violate the UN Charter. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand was asked about Canadian arms ending up in Sudan via the UAE. Although she says that she takes this issue “extremely seriously,” she has not stopped the flow of weapons. We know that UAE is arming the RSF paramilitaries, and that Canadian armoured vehicles are being used by the RSF in El Fasher. How long is Canada going to pretend that there isn’t a problem?
