Another prominent mallam in northern Nigeria’s growing spiritual-healing ecosystem is Malam Samaila Mairauhanai (also known as Mairafanai) of Zaria, Kaduna, who describes himself as an Islamic spiritual healer. His Hausa-language material says he performs ruqya (rukiyya) and, by Allah’s permission, treats or breaks tsafi, mayu and aljani, terms associated with sorcery, witches and jinn. Videos appear to show ongoing deliverance sessions involving clients and the application of liquids.

In many African communities, farming was never just an individual responsibility. Today, the village works your farm. Tomorrow, they work someone else’s. Labor is shared, harvests are protected, and no household is expected to face every challenge alone. This tradition has different names across Africa. In Ghana, Nnoboa brings farmers together to work one person’s farm, with the favor later returned. In Zimbabwe, Nhimbe brings communities together for demanding work such as ploughing, planting and harvesting. Similar systems exist in Ethiopia, Malawi and Nigeria. The principle is simple: your community is your workforce, and your labor belongs to the community too. It is a system of reciprocity. Today you help your neighbor get their farm done. Tomorrow, when you need the hands, they show up for you.

What looks like dreadlocks on Himba women is actually hundreds of thin plaits coated in otjize, a mixture of red ochre and butterfat. The plaits may include goat hair, woven straw or hair extensions, creating the distinctive rope-like red appearance. Women spend hours styling one another’s hair, and the paste is reapplied regularly. Himba hairstyles are more than decoration. They communicate a woman’s age, marital status and stage of life. Younger women may wear two forward-facing plaits called ozondato. Women at the marriageable stage may wear the three-pronged ekori, while married women often wear thicker red plaits and an erembe headdress made from animal skin. Men have their own hairstyle traditions. Boys and unmarried men traditionally wear a single long braid called ondatu, which is replaced by a head wrap known as ombwiya after marriage. Among the Himba, hair is not simply about appearance. It is a visible expression of identity, gender and social status.

This is an example of the traditional and spiritual healing practices of Adja Alimata Zonbo, a traditional healer (guérisseuse) from Burkina Faso. In this session, she is seen working with a man who is described as suffering from paralysis. Through her traditional healing process, she performs a series of ritual and spiritual practices intended to restore his movement and wellbeing. The session offers a glimpse into a living healing tradition in Burkina Faso, where spiritual practices, ritual objects, and traditional knowledge can form part of the healing process. The video documents what is presented as a healing session; it does not by itself establish a medical diagnosis or scientifically verify the cause of the man's condition or the effectiveness of the treatment.

Some African rivers have an almost unnatural emerald green colour, yet the water can be crystal clear and completely free of pollution or an algae bloom. The colour can come from a combination of geology, dissolved minerals, microscopic mineral particles, water depth, and light scattering. In clear water over pale rock or sand, sunlight can produce an intense emerald or turquoise appearance. But is that what we’re seeing in this particular video? Is the river actually this intensely green, or has a filter or colour grading been applied?
