Allow me to elaborate on the role of activists at, or adjacent to, City Hall: One of the clearest examples of Mayor Olivia Chow’s tacit or explicit support for activists who engage in unsavoury tactics is her political connection to ProgressTO. Chow’s former chief of staff, Michal Hay, previously served as executive director of ProgressTO and is also a treasurer with the Broadbent Institute. The slate of candidates informally promoted by Chow in this municipal election includes several councillors endorsed by ProgressTO, including one who is herself a former executive director of the organization. Saman Tabasinejad, ProgressTO’s current executive director, previously held a leadership role with the Iranian Canadian Congress— a group that has organized pro-Islamic Republic demonstrations where participants, including self-deputized marshals, have used aggressive tactics to prevent independent journalists from documenting events. Earlier this year, Tabasinejad introduced an activist receiving significant funding at the Broadbent Institute’s Progressives Summit and moderated a panel discussion involving him, despite the activist having been arrested and charged with assaulting police during a demonstration just weeks earlier and having a history of allegations relating to violence against police that dates back to the G20. Meanwhile, PressProgress, an activist news outlet largely funded by the Broadbent Institute, has published reporting attempting to discredit Mayor Chow’s primary opponent through smear-by-association tactics. ProgressTO, for its part, appears to be working alongside local influencers to attack that same candidate, including a comedian who hosted the Broadbent Institute’s Progress Gala in 2025. None of these relationships, taken individually, necessarily establish responsibility for the conduct of every activist within these overlapping political networks. But together, they raise legitimate questions about who has access to political power at City Hall, what conduct is tolerated, and how closely elected officials and their allies are willing to associate with activists who engage in intimidation or alleged violence. #Toronto #VoteSad I have a practical understanding of how activists and political organizations work together to influence public opinion and political decision-making, whether through persuasion or pressure. WATCH: Footage from an incident involving Kate Tracey, the Canadian living in America who allegedly accosted then assaulted teenagers at Point Pleasant Beach over Independence Day weekend. According to a sworn statement, the altercation was triggered by Tracey’s reaction to the teenagers’ pro-Trump, pro-ICE clothing. Tracey was charged with simple assault, endangering the welfare of a child, harassment and obstruction. The Department of Homeland Security says Tracey overstayed her visa, which expired in 2024. Tracey is currently being held in an ICE detention centre. In Canada, some adults have come to view violence or intimidation against young people as morally justified when the targets are perceived as “fascist.” Publicly-funded “watchdog” organizations like the Canadian Anti-Hate Network (Canada’s SPLC offshoot) contribute to legitimizing that mindset by portraying certain ideological opponents as beyond the bounds of acceptable discourse. Violence by Antifa-aligned individuals frequently goes unaddressed, even when directed at minors. Of the people featured in the montage below, only one was arrested for conduct involving minors— and that case was ultimately resolved with a peace bond. Dr. Kavita Algu is a board member of the Movement Media Hub (MMH), who was recently profiled by Shree Paradkar in the Toronto Star. The article details Algu’s resignation from the palliative care team at Mount Sinai. Algu alleges she was targeted because of her pro-Palestine advocacy. After Algu filed a discrimination complaint against a Jewish colleague who had called her racist online, a workplace investigator concluded that Algu was disruptive, unprofessional, and had a disproportionately negative impact on workplace culture.
