"Did we actually win the block size war — or did we lose?" Samson Mow asks the question most Bitcoiners won't. Fees as a filter, the jump to 4MB, and why Luke Dashjr may have been right about smaller blocks. The context the BIP 110 fight skips. 👇 Samson Mow on whether we actually won the block size war: "The Core people say the fees are the filter. But that misses the point — you're not looking at the entire network, and what's already happened. Yes, fees filter spam. You pay fees to transact, and a spammer pays fees too. But during the block size war, we changed the whole dynamic. We changed the unit economics — we increased the block size and decreased fee pressure. So we actually made it cheaper to spam the network. Only one person talked about decreasing the block size back then — Luke Dashjr. And I think he was right. So it begs the question: did we actually win the block size war, or did we lose? We had a net increase in effective block space, going to four megabytes — and the repercussions of that, I don't think we've really reasoned out. Maybe it was a mistake to go to four. Luke Dashjr on what actually belongs on the Bitcoin blockchain: "Spam is anything the person who's getting it did not solicit, did not consent to. In the context of Bitcoin, that's any data that doesn't involve, in some way, the transfer of coins from one person to another. Everything else is just clogging the network and ruining the experience for everyone else. People who want to share JPEGs can do that. There are websites for it. There are even decentralized ways to do it, like BitTorrent. Bitcoin is the best financial education anyone can buy & your ticket to entry is whatever you can afford to stack & it will change your life. Not just in a material way because I believe that once you understand Bitcoin & you start to realize that no matter how many sats you have that is going to lead to a dollar value that you may not have ever thought you could achieve. So from wherever you start, once you grok bitcoin you realize where you are going & when you realize where you are going you start to feel wealthy. You start to feel abundant. It's just a matter of time. The abundance is coming. The wealth is coming. It's just a matter of time. That is such a massive shift in your mindset that you begin to attract other positive things in your life. It's that mind-shift. It's the vibe you give off. Bitcoin Mechanic on who actually controls Bitcoin: "Miners are employees of the network. That's the end of it. The nodes are the boss. People are very worried about what miners think, and not at all worried about what nodes think. But nodes are more important. They're higher up in the hierarchy. When miners get out of line, it's nodes that give them a slap. This was the fork wars. We let miners have a say in whether we got SegWit, and they said no. So we fought a war over it, we won, and we slapped the miners and put them back in their place. If miners are in control, if devs are in control, it just turns into a shitcoin.
