Heartbreaking scenes out of Effingham County, IL this morning. 💔 As first light broke, drone footage reveal the true, devastating extent of the storms that ripped through our area Wednesday evening. The path of destruction is staggering. Here is what the view from above shows: Homes Leveled: Several residences have been completely flattened into piles of debris, while others have had their roofs and top floors entirely sheared off. Vehicles Tossed: The sheer power of the wind flipped heavy pickup trucks, cars, and trailers, scattering them like toys into fields and yards. Widespread Destruction: Outbuildings and agricultural structures have been shredded, with metal siding peeled away and debris strewn across hundreds of yards of farmland. Shattered Tree Lines: Entire groves of trees have been snapped in half or completely uprooted. Please keep the families and first responders in your thoughts and prayers today as the long road to assessment and recovery begins. If you are out in the affected areas, please stay safe, watch for downed power lines, and give emergency crews the space they need to work. Some western NC communities may be out of power for the whole winter. I spoke Victoria in Little Creek community and she shared with me how they are facing 6 months or longer without power. But with the help of many some are helping in a big way. She shared with me how Samaritan's Purse has flown in several helicopter loads of supplies including 52 whole house generators. In between my Arizona flooding coverage for The Weather Channel I got to swing by Arizona Snowbowl north of Flagstaff on Saturday and the Aspen colors were amazing. Reporting from Lena, Illinois, tonight (April 17th) for The Weather Channel following this afternoon’s tornado. The damage through the town is widespread, with several homes and businesses sustaining substantial structural damage. Many areas are currently difficult to access due to a significant number of downed trees and power lines across the roadways. The most important update: despite the severity of the property damage, there are no known deaths or injuries reported at this time. Local crews are on-site working to clear debris and restore access.
