While the insurgent wave of new progressive Democrats have, for the most part, consistently opposed American support for Israel's genocidal policy in Gaza, many of them still support NATO's expansionist war in Ukraine. I was there when the agreement was made between the West and Russia to not expand NATO beyond a unified Germany. NATO, led by the U.S., went on to break that promise several times, eventually culminating in the Ukraine proxy war.

The problem with this insurgent wave of Democratic candidates is that without bases to mobilize into mass movements against the ruling class, they are effectively useless. Currently, these candidates are not using mass movements to build power but instead working within the hierarchy of the Democratic Party — a party that is beholden to corporate donors with a vested interest in maintaining U.S. imperialism and working class austerity.

An audience member at a Q&A recently asked me why I'm so apocalyptic. The genocide in Gaza, beyond being a tragedy, marks an irreversible shift in the global world order. Before the genocide, the imperialist ambitions of the Western oligarchic class were partially constrained by the utopian ideal of the rules-based order. Now that ideal is gone, and unrestrained barbarity will characterize the methodology of the war-making ruling class. In other words — our future is an apocalyptic one.
