Quartering elk in the backcountry takes a lot of time, and because of it, a lot of folks get sloppy. Use a separate knife for skinning and your initial cuts. One you never use against the meat. That wet hide brings in dirt, muck, and all the stuff we don't want on something we're going to consume. #PursuitWithCliff

Everybody's got a bear defense system. Everybody says theirs is perfect. Three weeks in grizzly country with guys who spend real time around interior bears that have almost no fear of humans. Four systems. All preferences, none of them perfect. Know the pros and cons and choose accordingly. #PursuitWithCliff

Most folks butcher a bear hot off the kill and wonder why getting the fat off the hams is so miserable. Hang it overnight. Let it cool. Then before you take the ham off the bone, score the fat layer right on the hanging animal and peel it off in strips. Chop it up, render it and fry some backstrap over the fire.

Maybe as you get older and have your own stories you end up appreciating old stuff with history more. One I’ll keep forever, with a good story and a lot of stories.

Nothing humbles a packout like a full body bull elk hide. Big, sloppy, and a nightmare to deal with. The fix is mantying it up! Fold it tight, lock it down, turn that mess into a clean package your horse or your backpack can deal with.

Packing into the wilderness on horses and mules will take you back in time. Sit with it long enough and you start realizing how recent it was that people lived this way. Just 3-4 generations ago. They rode through wild, unforgiving country to find food, to find community, to avoid the folks who meant them harm. From as far back as the Mongols to as recent as the settling of the West, people spent their time managing livestock, freezing, struggling, and grinding across entire continents. We think their lives were difficult relative to our cushy existence. But I don’t buy it anymore. They woke up with a purpose. A task. Movement, sunlight, physical work, a reason to step into the day. The wild handed them a challenge every morning and every night. That’s the stuff humans are built for. We made things easier and somehow made everything harder. Don’t discount what real challenge used to give us. Go find some of it again.

Most folks assume “everything gets used” is marketing copy. I get it… and I’m one of those guys who has to go see for himself. In Africa, it checks out. Without exception, every animal we shot was eaten by us, eaten by the staff, or sold in the commercial market the same way beef gets sold in a grocery store back home. Nothing wasted. Here’s the part that surprised me. Game meat in Africa isn’t a premium product. It’s cheaper than domestic beef. That’s the inverse of how it works here. In the US, wild game is mostly accessed by people with enough disposable income to hunt. In Africa, it’s the affordable protein. The cheaper option on the shelf. Kinda cool. On average, from what I saw, game is more utilized in Africa than it is in the US.

The vast majority of hunters would be better off if they taped their magnification at 8x-10x power. Period. Cranking it higher is one of the most common mistakes in the woods. More magnification doesn’t make you more accurate. It makes you more likely to blow a wind call. More likely to miscall whether you hit the animal. More likely to be incapable of getting a follow-up shot. And for a lot of guys, it cranks up the buck fever, because the wobble zone looks bigger and more erratic than it actually is.

He was one of the most grateful clients I’ve guided. I hunted with him on his very first big game hunt. And, unfortunately, his last. Tim messaged me a few months after retiring from a lifelong career as an investment banker. No outdoor background. No hunting experience. But he didn’t want an easy button hunt. He wanted the full deal. Seven days. Living out of a backpack. One of the more unforgiving wilderness environments in North America. He trained hard for it. Took the prep seriously. Somewhere along the way, he became a good friend. Tim was a beam of light the entire trip. Always positive. Always present. Never complained. Honestly, he made a lot of seasoned hunters look soft. That hunt stuck with me. Felt like a quiet reminder that if you’ve crossed the halfway point in life, waiting around is a bad strategy. The “next hunt” is never guaranteed. We had an incredible time out there. He killed a beautiful bear. Left the mountains fired up about doing more backcountry hunts and spending that time with his sons. He passed away less than six months later. I just hung his bear in my recording studio. Not as a trophy. As a reminder.
