The law has changed. The culture hasn’t. Exposing threats to academic freedom in UK universities — and pushing institutions to meet their free-speech duties.

Watch the full interview with Cambridge student Thea Sewell, recorded as part of the Committee for Academic Freedom’s ongoing casework. Thea speaks in detail about what happened after she broached the topic of women’s sex-based rights with a friend, and showed her a copy of Helen Joyce’s bestselling book, Trans: When Ideology Meets Reality. As Thea says, “everything started falling apart” — friends shunned her, she was branded a “bigot”, and later found the slur “TERF” scratched into her college door. CAF is supporting Thea and has written formally to the University of Cambridge raising serious concerns about the application of its free-speech duties. We’re releasing the full interview so people can hear directly, in her own words, how she became interested in this topic, what this experience has been like — and why it’s time students got comfortable with, as Thea puts it, “disagreeing loudly and then going for a pint”. “There was an absolutely vicious campaign to shut down any discussion.” Prof Alice Sullivan, speaking on our second panel, “Censorship in the Sciences: Free Inquiry Under Pressure,” described the irruption of gender ideology into public life and the pernicious effect of a no debate culture that has left gender-critical academics unable to defend the importance of biological sex in policy and law. #AcademicFreedom #FreeInquiry #CAFConference

“In circumstances where there was silencing, it seems to me that universities have a duty to provide a space for rational discussion… and they absolutely failed that test.” CAF Advisory Board member, Prof Alice Sullivan, speaking on our second panel, “Censorship in the Sciences: Free Inquiry Under Pressure,” on how the no debate culture has silenced gender-critical academics and eroded open inquiry within universities. #AcademicFreedom #FreeSpeech
