🚨 HMRC’S CRYPTO TAX NUMBERS DROP TOMORROW🚨 A peer of mine has found out via a Freedom of Information request that HMRC is due to publish new 2024/25 crypto tax figures. And they could reveal a huge gap between the number of people investing in crypto and the number actually reporting it for tax. HMRC already receives data from crypto platforms, and with CARF now increasing the amount of information being collected, that gap is only going to become more visible. The important question isn’t just how many people declared crypto. It’s how many didn’t. If you’ve got undeclared crypto gains, income or historic transactions, now is the time to get ahead of HMRC. 🚨 COINBASE JUST LAUNCHED CRYPTO LOANS IN THE UK 🇬🇧 🚨 You can now borrow up to $5 million in USDC against your Bitcoin or Ethereum. Without selling a single sat 👀 🤔 So is it taxable? And the honest answer right now is… it depends. HMRC’s rules hinge on beneficial ownership. If you pledge your BTC as collateral but still own it economically, the argument is there is no disposal and no CGT. But HMRC have never confirmed this for products like Coinbase’s. That ambiguity is exactly why I am in active conversations with HMRC around their DeFi discussion document 🔍 Their own consultation proposed that locking tokens as collateral should NOT trigger a taxable event as long as you retain economic ownership. Not law yet. But if it lands the way it is written, this could be genuinely tax free for UK users 🙌 This is massive for anyone who wants liquidity without a tax bill.
