I think humor is a great way of building bridges between two peoples who have historically been at odds. But yannispappas, bro… what was that Turkish impression? 😂 You had them sounding Arab. It kind of proves a point though. A lot of Greek-Americans don’t actually grow up around Turks, yet can have very strong opinions about them. I think that’s why you often see a different dynamic between Greeks and Turks in places like London or Germany. We grow up together. We go to school together, work together, become friends, and actually get to see the commonalities firsthand instead of only hearing about the differences.

Greeks are often labeled simply as European because modern Greece sits within Europe, but that doesn’t fully capture who Greeks are historically or culturally. For most of history, Greek populations existed across the entire Aegean world, including western Anatolia and the eastern Mediterranean, not just within today’s borders. That long presence created a people shaped by both southern European and western Asian influences through continuous contact, migration, and exchange. Because of this, Greeks are best understood as an Eastern Mediterranean people. The term reflects the reality that Greek identity developed at the crossroads of Europe and Western Asia, combining elements of both rather than fitting neatly into a single continental category.
