The New Atheist movement, which influenced Bill Maher, developed as a movement which largely aligned itself with Western imperialism in the Middle East under the guise of combating religion. The logic of the movement was that the problems in the Middle East are due to Islam and therefore require intervention. What they often deliberately ignored or downplayed was the role of Western intervention in causing these problems in the first place.

Malcolm was so encouraged by his travels in Africa that he decided to create an organization which was modeled from the OAU. Not only was Malcolm a Pan-Africanist, but the leaders that he met with in Africa only deepened his belief in Pan-Africanism.
