If J7 sent Baker something that sounded like she might actually do it, taking it seriously is the only decent option. taking it seriously is the only non-asshole move. That’s not “watching over her.” That’s not being a creep. That’s not turning on a friend. That’s not doing the thing Jess would have crucified him for not doing. That’s the whole point. Jess doesn’t get to invent the rule after the fact. She doesn’t get to say Baker was wrong for treating a concerning message like a concerning message, then pretend she’d have praised him if he’d ignored it. If he’d shrugged and something happened, she’d be first in line calling him heartless. You already know that. Everyone watching this already knows that. So this isn’t about J7. If it were, the question would be simple: did he take a possible crisis seriously, or did he blow it off? He took it seriously. That’s the part Jess can’t stand, because it doesn’t fit the story she needs. The story needs Baker as the guy who used J7, discarded J7, or failed J7. Not the guy who actually paid attention when it counted. That’s why “stop watching him” is so gross. It’s not a safety argument. It’s not a loyalty argument. It’s an audience-control argument. Don’t look at the receipts. Don’t notice the double standard. Don’t ask what she’d have said if he’d done the opposite. Just leave, so the narrative doesn’t have to compete with reality. Baker didn’t turn people against J7 by taking her seriously. Jess is turning people against Baker for the crime of not playing along. Telling people to stop watching is the tell. When the argument stops being “here’s what happened” and becomes “don’t look at the other guy,” it’s not about J7 anymore. It’s about controlling the room. That’s the ugly part. Not the concern. The rewrite.
