Identifying 14 transfer agencies, the Embassy stated it is actively assisting ongoing FBI investigations into these fraudulent money transfer firms, most of whom are run by Somalian and Eritrean nationals. In a related development, over 200 individual accounts have been frozen in Ethiopia thus far. Recent statements from the National Bank of Ethiopia indicate that funds processed through these agents often end up in shadow bank accounts based in countries such as the UAE, Turkey, and Qatar, with some of the money subsequently being funneled to arms dealers and even terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab.
