Members of the SAPS Provincial Tracing Team were in the area conducting firearm-related operations. They approached the suspect’s house in Mzomusha but were allegedly shot at while demanding he open the door. The 19-year-old suspect died in the shootout. An unlicensed 9mm pistol was recovered.

EXCLUSIVE | “We will challenge them legally and deal with them, but if they want to come physically, we will meet them on the field.” KZN police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has exposed a plot to silence him over his investigations into the activities of certain individuals in the national office. He has now categorically stated that the “smear campaign” against him originates within the organisation. But Mkhwanazi insists he and his team are not backing down, and their work will soon reveal the rogue elements hiding out at the SAPS HQ. In an interview with eNCA, the veteran policeman says this isn’t the first time he’s been targeted for exposing criminals within the SAPS. Mkhwanazi has given an assurance that the level of policing in KZN won’t be affected by this. More on #DStv403.

EXCLUSIVE | The SAPS in KZN has launched an investigation into a senior officer in the KwaMashu area over his alleged links to the criminal underworld. The provincial commissioner says they have information that suggests he rallied people to open cases against fellow police officers after they were involved in a shootout that left four suspected extortionists dead near Duffs Road. Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has reiterated the men in the VW Polo were wanted for extortion, murder and other crimes, their guns were illegal, and there was no mistaken identity. He says the events leading up to their deaths is already under investigation by IPID, which is standard procedure. eNCA #DStv403

“The best medicine we know how to administer as the police is this that we are currently doing.” KZN SAPS commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi draws a comparison between the 4278 victims slaughtered by criminals in just 9 months - about 16 a day - and the 105 suspects killed during police shootouts. He says it’s not just his police officers who are challenged by them in a violent way - citizens face this reality every day. eNCA

A relative of Zakariyya Desai - who was abducted last year for five months - claims Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya instructed a captain to introduce a “private investigator” to the family. Later, when suspected kidnapping mastermind Esmael Nangy was arrested, the police team allegedly found payments from Nangy to the same PI. eNCA
