It's 8:30 on a Saturday night when the phone rings "Hi, Dave, it's Warren". Yes THAT Warren. Academy Award Winning Director Warren Beatty. I had been editing his Lifetime Achievement Award reel for the Art Directors Guild Awards and I had sent over my recent cut based on his notes the day before. "So, I got the new cut and it doesn't work. Your version made my wife cry" (wait, I made Anette Bening cry?) "Is there any way you can walk me through your choices." At first I was worried that I had screwed up. Hell, I'm not an editor really. I was also surprised that Warren Beatty wanted to spend his Saturday night chatting with me, but over the next hour as I walked him through my edits on the phone I realized he was trying to understand why my version worked and his changes didn't. This Academy Award winning director was still learning and exploring his craft. It was surreal. That month I had done deep dive on his work and was in awe of what he created, REDS is a masterpiece that folks need to check out. Bonnie and Clyde, Heaven Can Wait, Shampoo... damn. One of the coolest moments of my career, and I am grateful for his collaboration. Enjoy the final piece.
