Sir Anthony Hopkins says he never tolerated tyrannical directors who believed they could bully actors on set. He recalls one director who started shouting at a young actress while giving her notes. Hopkins immediately stepped in. “Hold it. You raise your voice one decibel to this lady and i’m going. And you my dear, should leave as well” Afterward, the actress thanked him. Hopkins then asked how long the director had been treating her that way. “How long has he been doing that?” She told him it had been happening throughout the entire film. Florence Pugh explains how intimacy coordinators changed filming sex scenes Louis Theroux: How kind of literal is it? Florence Pugh: Whereas before, that was never the case. Louis Theroux: Really? Florence Pugh: Before, whenever you’d come to a sex scene, you’d come to set and you’d start talking about it then. You’d be trying to discuss what your vision was or what their vision was, and it was all only in that moment that you’d be discussing it. It would feel a bit strange or a bit awkward., whereas I think now the communication happens for a good chunk of time beforehand. You have safe words, you have areas that you don’t like being touched, areas that are fine for someone to touch. All of these conversations are actually now happening, whereas before they didn’t happen. Louis Theroux: Are some bits taped off? Would you wear little slips and things? Florence Pugh: Yes. It’s their job to be in charge of that. Before, there wasn’t a specific person on set to be in charge of your coverage. I had experience in the past where we were using wig glue to stitch me down because someone wasn’t really thinking about it. But you’ve now got a dedicated person that is there to make sure that all of your comfort is being thought about. Your lawyer will basically be going through a nudity rider, what you are allowing and what you’re not allowing. Louis Theroux: And it will be spelled out? Florence Pugh: Yes. Louis Theroux: What? Florence Pugh: Nipple will be on show, upper breast will not show, vagina will not show. Everything has to be spelled out, everybody has to be so tender because it’s very exposing. Gary Oldman flew between Los Angeles and London 27 times while filming Batman to be with his kids Gary Oldman: So for the first Batman, I was living here in Los Angeles. I was a single dad, and I didn’t really want to leave the kids for too long. But the first Batman was shooting in England, in London, which was doubling as Gotham. I said to Chris, “Would it be okay? I’ll fly in, I’ll shoot, and then fly back. If there’s anything wrong with the dailies… you know where I am. I’ll be in the car on my way to the airport.” “If everything’s cool, you know where I’ll be. I’ll get in the car, I’ll go to the airport, I’ll fly home, and then I’ll see you Thursday.” I think I ended up doing 27 round trips on the first Batman. Josh Horowitz: Got platinum status. Gary Oldman: And so I’d go home for two days, see the kids, fly back, work three days, go home, be home for three days. I’d fly to London and do one shot, and then get on the plane the next morning and come back. Josh Horowitz: So, real jet lag helped the world-weariness, basically. Gary Oldman: This was… I’m being somewhat silly, but, you know, there’s a sort of a world-weariness to him. And so I embraced the feeling that you have when you’re going back and forth, you’ve been on a long flight. I just thought, “I can actually use this to my advantage.” Josh Horowitz: It worked out, yeah.
