This is the 55-foot central platform mound at Winterville, Mississippi. I've shown this before but many haven't seen it. A couple years ago the State of Mississippi decided to restore as much as possible of the 23 original mounds at this major Mississippian site (A.D. 1200). This huge temple mound was the first in their efforts: Large foliage was removed, erosion fixed, and the original ramp was restored close to what the earliest surveys showed. Winterville actually rivals the somewhat larger and palisade-walled Moundville, Alabama complex. The State and its archaeological staff, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and the tribal officials involved with the project have done a good job. Hopefully other parts of the site will see continued progress. This is something good for archaeology as a profession.

When I get a chance, I'll post much higher quality video of us finding 31 crashed planes in the Bahamas. This is from 2007 at Andros Island. We had to walk through 1.5 miles on mangroves to get to this and then through water. It was very, very windy. My then 84-year old father went along with us.

It is really difficult to get a perspective of how massive some mounds are, but we tried in this video. This starts with "Saul's Mound" at the Pinson Mounds complex in Tennessee. It is 72 feet tall and is tied with a mound in Louisiana as the 2nd tallest in the USA. The latter portion of the video shows Ozier's Mound and the Twin Mounds at the site. The mounds at Pinson were made as early as 100 B.C.-A.D. 100.
