The US government shut down is just the latest glaring example of the failure of the American healthcare system. The idea that you can mandate people to purchase private health insurance from an unreformed monopoly that charges outrageous prices through a hospital system with no transparent pricing is an absurdity. There are solutions to the American healthcare system ... ranging from direct pricing with catastrophic coverage to an expansion of Medicare to cover everybody. However, because both political parties are funded by the private and health insurance monopoly the government makes policy that enriches that monopoly at the expense of the American people and then put on theatrics like these shutdowns. We can do better
