As the government shutdown stretches on and TSA workers approach more than a month without pay, Tyler Perry reportedly showed up at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport prepared to help in a major way. Sources say he intended to hand out a significant amount of money to ease some of the financial pressure officers and their families are facing. Because of federal restrictions, TSA agents were unable to accept the funds directly. Still, Perry stayed. He spoke with workers. He thanked them for continuing to show up without a paycheck. History is being rewritten inside one of America’s most prestigious hospitals. For the first time ever, the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery service at Johns Hopkins Hospital is being led by five Black surgeons. All which are senior residents, marking a historic milestone for the institution. The team includes highly accomplished physicians with two PhDs and six master’s degrees among them, including Dr. Lawrence B. Brown and Dr. Zachary Numa. Together, they are leading care at a Level 1 trauma center in a field where only 6% of surgeons nationwide are Black. And the symbolism runs deep. There was a time when Black patients were not allowed to be treated at Johns Hopkins. Today, Black surgeons are leading critical care inside its walls.
