In Esan Tradition, there's an ancient practice which forbids an Esan man from dividing/blessing Kola nut in the presence of an Edo man "even if it's in an esan traditional gathering". The aspect of this tradition is that even a five-year-old Benin boy, when present in a gathering of elders, is expected to bless and break the kola nut for them, including before the Onojie (king). A recent video from an Esan community meeting, with several Onojies at a conference in AAU, specifically requesting that a Benin person, wherever he may be, should step forward to bless the kola nut for them. In situations where no Benin boy or man is available, the responsibility falls on someone from Irrua. This ancient practice is a symbolic gesture of loyalty and honor to the Benin Soil and throne.
