The terrorist behind the Temple Israel attack in Michigan tried to kill Americans on U.S. soil, acting under Hezbollah’s direction. When we say Iran and Hezbollah are a threat not only to Israel but to the United States, this is exactly what we mean.

At Daley Plaza in the heart of Chicago, hundreds gathered today to celebrate Israel’s 78th Independence Day. I was deeply moved to raise the Israeli flag and address the crowd. Israel is more than a country. It is the realization of an ancient hope, the right of the Jewish people to live freely in our homeland. That idea has a name: Zionism. And today, in front of hundreds of supporters and friends of Israel, I said it loud and clear: I am a proud Zionist. And together, we said it: we are proud Zionists. Thank you to the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago for organizing this meaningful event and for your leadership in strengthening the bond between our communities. Israel matters. Our partnership matters. Happy Independence Day. Yom Ha’atzmaut Same’ach. 🇮🇱🇺🇸

I was humbled to join Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, for Shabbat services last night to stand with the Jewish community after a horrific antisemitic terror attack against the synagogue. During my remarks to the congregation, I shared that Israel stands with the community, now and always, just as the community has always stood with Israel. Antisemitism must be confronted, condemned, and combated wherever it appears.

The hatred directed at Jews and at Israel did not begin on October 7, and it did not begin with Hamas. Antisemitism is the oldest hatred. In our time, it is fueled by Iran and carried out by terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. Jewish history teaches vigilance, but also resilience. Again and again, the Jewish people faced those who sought to harm them. Again and again, they endured. That same resilience is still very present today, even while families are spending nights in shelters and living with uncertainty. Our spirit remains strong.

Last week I had the privilege of joining Governor Pillen Governor Jim Pillen to his first visit to Israel ישראל. The Governor came to stand in solidarity with the people of Israel and together we saw the strong foundations of the Israel–Nebraska partnership. We also explored opportunities to expand economic cooperation in agriculture, innovation, healthcare and more. This partnership has tremendous potential and I look forward to building on it together. 🇮🇱🤝🏻🇺🇸🌽
