At 1.10 on Friday 13 March, after months of deliberation in the Lords and Commons, we get to the very crux of the misunderstanding that has underpinned the AS debate throughout. In answer to Lord Deben's question to Lord Falconer about whether he agreed with Baroness Murphy that assisted dying is part of palliative care, Falconer replied: "Assisted dying is about giving somebody a good death and I think palliative care is about exactly the same thing." Unsurprisingly, Lord Deben and others were visibly taken aback. In one sentence, Lord Falconer has revealed the intention behind this Bill, which is to bring assisted suicide into our palliative care system and forever remove the distinction between the two.
