Operation Vanguard has launched in Braintree, Chelmsford and Colchester. Following concerns about migrants from the Wethersfield asylum centre gathering in these areas, a three-month trial will see six trained security operatives providing a visible presence to reassure residents, businesses and visitors. "Operation Vanguard is a direct response to ensure how safe and secure our residents feel across the county. "At Essex County Council, we prioritise being proactive over being reactive and that is exactly what we are doing with Operation Vanguard. "We cannot and will not wait for an increase in antisocial behaviour and crime before acting. "The safety of Essex residents is quite simply, not negotiable." A second Union Flag has been raised outside of Essex County Council’s headquarters in Chelmsford, following control of the authority transferring to Reform UK after last week’s elections. The move brings Essex County Council in line with Reform UK national policy, which only permits the Union, national, county or armed forces flags to fly at council buildings under its control. “Today we have raised a second Union Flag at County Hall in Chelmsford. It was a proud moment to see it flying high, representing all of the nations that make up our wonderful United Kingdom.” Cllr Peter Harris, Leader of the Council’s Reform UK group and County Council Leader Elect. The flag of Ukraine that had previously flown since 2022 has been replaced, and following discussions with the Ukrainian community in the county, will find a new home. Councillor Harris said: “The replacement of the Ukraine flag does not diminish the support and generosity that Essex residents have shown the people of Ukraine since 2022 and I know this will continue.”

The Leader of Essex County Council is demanding that the Government ditches plans, set to be announced this evening (Thursday June 25 2026), to increase the numbers of asylum seekers at the Wethersfield camp in Essex by more than 60%. Later this evening the Government will announce plans to utilise the full capacity at Wethersfield, increasing numbers from the current 766 to 1,245, the current maximum ‘surge capacity’ because of the closure of 20 more asylum hotels. “I have a simple message for the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood – Enough is enough. We are not a dumping ground for the result of a failing asylum system. “Closing hotels is one thing but shifting the impact onto Essex communities is unacceptable and this is what will result from this increase. “Those impacts are felt by people in towns and cities miles from Wethersfield itself – in Braintree, Colchester, and Chelmsford – because that is where the men living at Wethersfield are bussed to and from every week. “As a consequence, our police are having to deal with incidents of illegal migrants with nothing to do with their time but hang around town centres and get into trouble, committing numerous crimes, behaving anti-socially and harassing people including women and girls. This stretches police resources as well as our own public health and mental health capacity. “Essex County Council has said from the very beginning that the location of Wethersfield – in a rural heartland 11 miles from the nearest town – is completely wrong for a facility of this nature. “I will be seeking an urgent meeting with the Government, and local partners including our Police, Crime and Fire Commissioner to challenge this latest afront to our residents.” Cllr Peter Harris, Leader of Essex County Council.
